Power-outage
I have a CentOS-5.6 remote server in a house in Italy, where there are occasional thunder-storms. There was one yesterday, when the electricity went off 3 times, for a second or so on each occasion. My server, an HP MicroServer, came back (re-booted) on 2 of the 3 occasions, but not on the third. I assume that the problem arises because the machine does not close down properly. (Although it is

No GUI with CentOS-7.2
When I re-booted my HP MicroServer into CentOS-7.2 I was given a text console. When I run "startx" I get the response on screen [edited]: ===================== [tim at alfred ~]$ startx xauth: file /home/tim/.serverauth.21307 does not exist X.Org X Server 1.17.2 Release Date: 2015-06-16 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: 2.6.32-220.17.1.el6.x86_64 ... CentOS-6 by PXEboot?
Has anyone succeeded in installing CentOS-6.0 by PXEboot. If so, would you say how you did it, please. I tried (on an HP MicroServer), but gave up in the end and used a USB stick installation instead. But I'd be very interested to know how to do it, for the future. Unfortunately I didn't keep a proper note of my PXEboot attempt, but IIRC the problem was that install.img was not found,

HP MicroServer
A bit OT, but I'm running CentOS-5.6 on this machine (in fact on two of them) and it seems to run perfectly - I've had no problems at all. Except that I'd like to add a second ethernet port, and am not sure where one can find a card that will fit this machine. As far as I can see, it requires a half-height PCIe card, which seems to be rather a rare animal. (There doesn't seem to

CentOS on the HP MicroServer
I'm been running two HP MicroServers as home-servers under CentOS-5.6 for 2 months, and have been very happy with their performance. I'm wondering if there are many other MicroServer/CentOS users around? I've been surprised when looking at the MicroServer forums (eg <<http://www.avforums.com/forums/networking-nas/ 1431514-hp-proliant-microserver-n36l-owners-thread.html>) how

A query on graphic console
I'm only getting a text console with CentOS-7.2 on my (oldish) HP MicroServer. The only explicit error I see in Xorg.0.log is that no driver is found for my Pixart USB optical mouse. My query is: would that be sufficient to prevent a graphic console? Incidentally, I can use X apps, eg xpdf, if I ssh in from my laptop. As always, any advice gratefully received. -- Timothy Murphy

NM on a server?
Is there any point in running NetworkManager on a server? The IP addresses of the two server NICS are fixed (192.168.1.2 and 192.168.2.2 .) I'm not clear if it is necessary in some way to run NM on a CentOS system? -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland

ipmi_si error on booting
I'm getting the (unintelligible to me) error message ipmi_si: Could not set up I/O space ERST: Failed to get Error Log Address Range when I try to boot any OS on the grub menu apart from the one I last installed. (Actually, Windows also boots properly.) I wonder if anyone has had this error message, and worked out where it comes from? I googled for it, and it has come up many times; but

CentOS-6 firewall how to open a port
I'm running CentOS-6 on an HP MicroServer (since this morning) and I'd like to open an non-standard port, for use on a laptop attached to the internet through the server. Do I have to explicitly add an iptables rule? If so, and I want to open (say) udp port 500 , what command should I give? I've always used shorewall in the past, and will probably do so now if the default firewall

Radeon driver under CentOS-6
I wonder if anyone has CentOS-6 working on an HP MicroServer? I'm having a problem with the graphics driver for the Radeon HD 4200 graphics card. CentOS-5.6 is working fine on this machine; but at present I only have CentOS-6 running in text mode. The graphics card as given by "/sbin/lspci -m" is ------------------------------- 01:05.0 "VGA compatible controller"

Update to CentOS 6.0 without CD/DVD reader
I've had a disaster on my home network server; the partition table on the disk containing / has become corrupted, and testdisk has not enabled me to recover the table. If anyone can help with this I should be grateful. However, that is not what I am writing about. I've installed a substitute box - and HP MicroServer - which by a miracle has CentOS-5.6 installed on it. Now I'm

OT Strange IP address on home network
Sounds like you have a host with a NIC that's configured for DHCP but either can't communicate with the DHCP server, or there are no free IPs for the DHCP server to give it.
