Using Pulse Audio--question
Hi all!
This seems to me as if it should be a trivial thing to do, but so far
I've wasted a lot of time on it and gotten nowhere:
I want to feed audio from a source (ipod, other player) into the audio
input on my C7 box via either the phone jack or an external USB sound
"card" I have, then I want to play it via the speakers connected to the
system.
I can find no way to do it with

MATE question
I know I should go to EPEL with this, but thought to ask here in case
anyone else uses Mate and may know more about it than I do.
I had installed the MATE 1.12 packages from epel testing a few days ago,
but since that did not include some of the devel packages, I just removed
it and reinstalled all the MATE 1.10 packages from epel-7.
they all installed fine, but now my desktop has a background,

more questions on setting up autofs on C7
Hi!
Thanks to some of you I got autofs set up on my C7 netbook for
mounting local cifs filesytems.
Now I want to do something on my C7 desktop machine, that seems to
me to be a little different, and I"m not sure how to do it.
I have an external RAID1 box that attaches via USB. It is/will be
nearly always /dev/sdc, but being USB I can't guarantee that it
will always be found there.

centos 5.5--gnome desktop--all icons disappeared.
gang, I feel dumb having to ask this...
I've got a Centos 5.5 installation (it's not new, I've been using it for
over a year on this machine) and all of a sudden just a few minutes ago
everything on the gnome desktop disappeared. no icons, right-click doesn't
bring up a context menu. the panels are still there, though, thank goodness.
tried logging off and back on but that

VLC package(s) for C6 ?
Hi listees!
Just installed C6 (more or less) permanently on my eeepc.
I've enabled rpmfusion non-free, rpmfusion free, elrepo, and epel,
prior to this point I've been running fedora on it (f10 thru f14)
and have always found VLC at rpmfusion.
(but finally RHEL/Centos have become modern enough to support the
eeepc's funky hardware, so I'm switching back--tired of the version

Firefox 7 vs latest Flash plugin vs CNN
I'm seeing a strange issue on my C-5.7 system.
running Firefox 7 with the very latest flash plugin.
browse to CNN, I can view any of the videos directly linked on the main
page, or directly linked on sub-pages.
but if I click on the video link at the top of the page (in the red bar)
Firefox displays the page as a list of "thumbnails" for each video with
a small viewer in the upper

Newer SANE packages for 5.9 ??
I just got a Canon Canoscan LiDE 210 scanner, which the SANE project pages
say works "completely" with Sane.
but what isn't obvious without a lot of digging is that the version of
Sane in EL5 isn't new enough.
it works fine with what's on my eeepc (Fedora 17) but not Centos 5.9.
I've been messing around with building sane from source, but have not
been fully

yum update tries and fails to install libreswan
On 6.5, I've got openswan installed, but yum update is wanting to install
libreswan.
If libreswan is intended to replace openswan, wouldn't the appropriate yum
transactions have been created to remove opnswan first?
I'm stumped. Advice appreciated.

brother printers VS systemd
I've used Brothers printer driver installer tool to install drivers
on C7 for a DCP7650DN. Cups thinks printing is working fine, but
nothing ever arrives at the printer: the printer remains asleep.
Looking at some of the setup instructions for the brother driver, it
looks as if it wants a symbolic link of /etc/init.d/cups to /etc/init.d/lpd.
neither of those exists in a systemd system, so

how2 mount ntfs partition that is part of a full HD image file
I have a full disk image file (courtesy of ddrescue), and need to mount
one of its partitions. I suppose I should have just extracted the single
partition when I was using ddrescue, but right now I have the whole disk
instead, and no disk space left to re-do the extraction (in fact I won't
be able to use the system where I did it for several weeks, so I'd love
to be able to mount just the

Using a "compose key" on Centos6
Hi all!
I ran into a description of how to set up a compose key for F21 and
decided to see if it would work on C6.
Well, the right configuration dialog exists, and I can choose a
key to use, but after completion, the compose key doesn't seem to work.
It works like a charm on Centos-7, though. If I select Right Win as
the compose key, typing <compose>ae results in "?" as I
