According to what I've read, Exec Shield is enabled in CentOS-6 and -7 by default. In CentOS-6, you can see it by: sysctl -a | grep -i shield

5.4 at last?
Now that it appears that some folks are able to get the 5.4 downloads (and a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to all the centos team members who make this possible!) I'm wondering when the updates will begin flowing so that those of us running 5.3 can do "yum upgrade" and enjoy all the benefits too? mouse scroll-wheel side-click configuration?
Still googling, no joy so far (though I'm not giving up yet). Can anyone point me to a resource that may help me figure out how to make the side-clicks of the scroll wheel on a logitech mouse do something useful? thanks! -- ---- Fred Smith -- fredex at fcshome.stoneham.ma.us ----------------------------- "And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,

permissions, kernel-2.6.8, and wine-20040813
Hi, Yesterday I upgraded to kernel 2.6.8 on my Fedora Core 2 system. This caused a problem with the version of wine I'd been using (20040505), so I upgraded wine to the current version (20040813). The remaining problem is as follows: I'm calling wine like this: wine start.exe vcbuild.bat and vcbuild.bat contains the following: set QMAKESPEC=win32-msvc.net set

klibc-1.0.9 released
I have released klibc-1.0.9. This version fixes signal handing on x86-64, and on i386 with Red Hat's execshield patch. There might be other architectures affected (ppc is known to *not* be affected), but right at the moment I don't have a good way to test those. The architectures affected are ones for which signal handing *without* SA_RESTORER set is broken. This is also the first

sound oddity on C6
I just encountered an oddity... it may have been this way for millennia :) but somehow I've never noticed it before... say I'm using X (which is pretty normal these days) and I have VLC playing a "radio" station. I do CTRL-ALT-Fx to switch to a text console THAT HAS NO ONE LOGGED IN on it, and voila: no sound! as soon as I log in, the audio returns. what gives here? --

openssl with FIPS140-2 ??
I see that CentOS does not provide the FIPS140-2 package for openSSL. I don't know if RH provides it or not. Can someone advise me on the best way to get it onto a CentOS or RHEL system, without breaking things? I'd also appreciate ANY related wisdom that's available, having pretty much NO wisdom of my own. thanks! Fred -- ---- Fred Smith -- fredex at fcshome.stoneham.ma.us

more questions on setting up autofs on C7
Hi! Thanks to some of you I got autofs set up on my C7 netbook for mounting local cifs filesytems. Now I want to do something on my C7 desktop machine, that seems to me to be a little different, and I"m not sure how to do it. I have an external RAID1 box that attaches via USB. It is/will be nearly always /dev/sdc, but being USB I can't guarantee that it will always be found there.

C6 or C7 for an old netbook
I've got an old HP Netbook, which is just fine for taking with when I'm travelling, to check email and news. I have a very old Ubuntu netbook-remix on it, and it really, *really* needs to be updated to something current. I, of course, would prefer CentOS.... The question is: I see that *if* the specs I just looked up (I'm at work, not home, where I could just turn it on, but they
