netbook screen suddenly goes black
Motherboard time. Netbook is probably a throw away issue. Cost more t to repair than buy new. question re: ls oddity
Hi all! I use Centos-7 all the time. I also have a Fedora-26 VM that I use only occasionally. Today I noticed that ls on the two systems gives different results when listing the same (networked) directory. the one on fedora 26 shows files with spaces in the names like this: 'CHURCH FAMILY ADDRESS AND PHONE LIST.doc' whereas the one on Centos shows it without the quotes. both systems

RH software collections
Off topic, since it is a RH question, but I'm hoping someone here can point me to the right place to pursue this: We need an official RH build of nginx that contains the lua module(s), but the nginx builds in the rh scl repository do not. So, I'm looking for how to make an appropriate contact to inquire if RH could add lua to their current nginx build for the software collections I

Anyone installed the amazon downloader on 5.1?
Just tried to install the Amazon-downloader on Centos 5.1 (the Fedora 8 version, which seems the closest match of any they offer). Of course it gets a bazillion unfulfilled dependencies. so I tried "yum localinstall ./a*m" and it trundles along for a while finding several of the packages available then spews out this: Error: Missing Dependency: libboost_date_time.so.3 is needed by

plug in USB device no longer noticed by system
Hi all! My C6 box seems to have developed this problem somewhere during recent weeks. not quite sure when, but I've noticed it several times lately. Whenever I plug in a USB device, be it a camera or a HD or a mouse, nothing happens. I mean nothing. /var/log/messages doesn't show any activity, lsusb does not show the new device. Back at the start of Feb I did move the raid1 pair of HDs

OH NO, Something has gone wrong!
Hi all! I'm setting up C7-64 as a VM using VirtualBox, on a Windows host. as soon as I install the vbox Guest Extensions and reboot, when I log in next time I get a white screen with a frowny face that says "Oh No, Something has gone wrong!" and then "A problem has occurred, and the system can't recover, please log out and try again." Sounds like a VirtualBox problem

yum update for 5.0 ==> 5.1
I have read multipe messages here from people upgrading from 5.0 to 5.1, presumably using "yum update" to do the deed. When I do "yum update" on my (I think) fully updated Centos 5 system I get no updates. Am I just being impatient (i.e., the updates haven't yet been pushed out) or am I somehow missing them? the recent gnupg update
Hi gang! I see the gnupg update became available a day or two ago. But every time I run "yum update" it says there's nothing to update. but: rpm -qa | grep -y gnupg reports: gnupg-debuginfo-1.4.2.2-1 gnupg-1.4.2.2-1 so it is installed. Any magic incantations I need to perform to get it updated? -- ---- Fred Smith -- fredex at fcshome.stoneham.ma.us

off NM problem [low priority]
On Centos 6.5, I use NM to bring up the VPN to my office, and to disconnect from it. every now and then I screw up and disconnect the LAN itself instead of the VPN. once I do that, even after reconnecting to the LAN I'm hosed. /etc/resolv.conf hasn't been put back to the non-VPN version, so I manually fix that. but even then I can't get any name resolution. I'm sure that

what is: ImageDecoder
I'm suddenly noticing multiple threads named "ImageDecoder" showing up in the output of top (when threads are turned on with "H"). I've no clue what this is, and haven't found out much about it by searching. Can someone tell me what it is, and if it's doing anything useful or just wasting cycles? thanks! -- ---- Fred Smith -- fredex at

mount options
Hi all! I've got a Venus DS3R Pro2 external drive unit with two drives set up as RAID-1, and the raid volume is formatted as ext4. it is listed in /etc/fstab as: UUID=f787c482-fb92-4ba7-87d6-cfeaef6b64c2 /mnt/backup ext4 defaults, users 0 2 if the external unit (which attaches via e-sata) is NOT powered on when the system boots, it hangs and drops to a maintenance prompt. how to config printing on C7 installed from live image
Hi All! I've just done a test installation (on an external USB HD) to see how C7 works on my Acer Aspire netbook. Apparently the live install (I used this one: CentOS-7.0-1406-x86_64-livecd.iso) does not install CUPS. I've done "yum install cups" and got a ton of stuff installed, but it won't let me set up a printer in the printing applet in either Gnome or MATE (I prefer

Sound input on C7
Hi all! I've just spent a frustrating hour trying to get audio to come out of the speakers, where the input is via a cable from the headphone jack of my Sansa Sandisk player. I'm usin the Mate desktop (yes, I know, centos doesn't support it, so this may more properly be a question for EPEL...) and the Mate Volume control Applet. I've got it configured to use the front panel mic
