Using Mariadb databases from old server
I'm running CentOS-7, but I left some MySQL databases on my old CentOS-6.5 partition which I'd like to retrieve. I assume they are contained in the file /var/lib/mysql/ibdata1 ? Could I just copy this file to /var/lib/mysql in CentOS-7? Or is there some way Mariadb or phpMyAdmin can import mysql databases from a server that is no longer running? -- Timothy Murphy gayleard /at/

Probably. The fact remains that booting was attractive, and now it isn't. --

HTML5 to SQL under CentOS
Several years ago I wrote a simple, short, HTML/PHP program on my CentOS server for adding items to a MySQL/MariaDB database on the server from my Fedora laptop. Recently I thought I would try to be up-to-date and re-write the program using HTML5 Forms, which seemed the proper thing to do, but I'm finding this surprisingly difficult. Does anyone have, or can point me to, a simple HTML5

OT Advantage of running DNS server?
I suppose a lot of it depends on your needs. For us, we run internal DNS servers for all the VMs we have running; mostly for software development and monitoring. It makes sense for us to do so as we have mostly Macs (and my Linux workstation) that work better using DNS. Had we been a mostly Windows shop, we'd likely use NetBIOS internally with some Dynamic DNS for win clients. We also have

Some thoughts on systemd
I haven't had any problems with systemd. However, I didn't have any problems with sysVinit over many years. But the only practical advantage of systemd that I've seen touted is that it speeds up boot-time. Even if this were true it does not seem to me worth worrying about, as - in my case at least - the frequency of re-booting is so low that even if it took twice as long it would

spamassassin with postfix/dovecot
I'm trying to install spamassassin on a postfix/dovecot server, running CentOS-6.4, following the instructions at <http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd>. I think I have taken all the steps indicated, and the configuration seems to pass the tests suggested, although the response is much more sparse than that described: ------------------------ [tim at alfred ~]$ telnet localhost 10024

Mysql databases from old system?
Last week I had a hard disk failure on my CentOS server. I managed to re-install CentOS on a new disk. I have the old mysql databases from /var/lib/mysql . Can I just move them to my new disk? Any help or suggestions gratefully received. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland
