CentOS 6 and XDMCP
Hi all, I am trying to use XDMCP from a Mac (OSX Lion, XQuartz) to an updated CentOS 6 64Bit host. I am tunneling through SSH, so I use XDMCP on the remote host locally via Xnest like this: > ssh -X -C -l $LOGINUSER $HOST -n "Xnest :1 -ac -geometry 1440x850 > -once -query localhost I get a black screen without any login window or desktop background. My /etc/gdm/custom.conf looks

Remote X connection to CentOS 5.5 using Xming -ac
Hello, I've rented a dedicated root server (SR7 at strato.de) and would like to run qemu at it, but get the error: # qemu -hda install.img -cdrom install47.iso -boot d Could not initialize SDL - exiting It seems that I have to establish X connection, so I've installed Xming at my WinXP laptop and at the server I have changed these 3 lines in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config: X11Forwarding

OT: configuring xming to know putty's not in a std. location
Is there some way to do this? I've got the current putty (actually, putty-cac), pageant, and plink in my user's Downlods directory - neither he nor I have admin authority on his laptop, and Desktop support's teleworking today - but I can't seem to find a way to configure xming to look there for putty. Or is it start putty, *then* start xming? mark

Duplicate *.desktop entries for GNOME in /usr/share/applications
Hi, Today I noticed something strange. There seem to be a series of duplicate desktop menu entries in /usr/share/applications. Example: gedit.desktop and org.gnome.gedit.desktop Other example: nautilus.desktop and org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop This is annoying, since I usually edit some custom menu entries for my users. Now, if I edit both files for a single application, I end up with duplicate

Re: [Spice-devel] [virt-tools-list] Is virsh supposed to work on Windows?
Hey Fernando, 1) As a possible workaround, can't you put a Linux server with virt-manager installed somewhere, and then have the Windows sysadmins use it through X11 forwarding (with Xming, or Cygwin installed on the Windows machines)? 2) Also, if virt-manager can run under Cygwin, you can use it directly on the Windows machines that way (I don't know if it does). capabilities("X11"): Force refresh from within R? (... and minor documentation issue)
Is there a way to refresh capabilities("X11") without restarting R such that it reflects the enabling/disabling of X11? BACKGROUND: If I launch R with X11 server disabled (e.g. ssh -X / ssh -Y to remote Linux but forgot to enable Xming on local Windows), then I get: > capabilities("X11") X11 FALSE > x11() Error in .External2(C_X11, d$display, d$width, d$height,

[ANNOUNCE] xorg-server 1.9.99.901
Ok, I think we've done enough damage for one release. Thanks everyone for pulling a long weekend to get changes prepared and reviewed. We're still missing the threaded input stuff, but that needs more review and I think we wore Tiago out this time around. If someone wants to propose merging it after the freeze, I think we should consider doing it. Note that this tarball depends on

XDMCP - no GDM login, only gray screen with X
I'm having trouble getting the GDM login screen to show up when I connect from a remote host. I'm using Xming on the local Windows machine, but every time I connect to the remote server all I get is a gray window with the X cursor. I have "Enable=true" in the [xdmcp] section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf. IPtables is disabled. I've googled around and read through the xdmcp page

Applications staying open in Gnome
CentOs 5.1 updated with Gnome as desktop. I notice that after a reboot some applications reappear mysteriously. It seems that the last application that was closed *before* reboot reappears. For instance I had gedit appearing for some time, opened with a blank "unknown document". Now I'm getting the hardware manager/soundcard section opened on the desktop each time I reboot

CentOS 7 install software Raid on large drives error
Greetings - I am trying to install CentOS 7 into a new Dell Precision 3610. I have two 3 TB drives that I want to setup in software RAID1. I followed the guide here for my install as it looked fairly detailed and complete (http://www.ictdude.com/howto/install-centos-7-software-raid-lvm/). I only changed the size of the partitions from what is described, but ended up with the disk

Need to unmount an LV from host system
Greetings - Ok, I made a mistake that I need to fix. Fortunately it is not a destructive mistake, but I need some advice on how to correct the problem. CentOS 6.3 host system named Earth I was creating some new logical volumes within my exiting volume group for a new virtual machine using the LVM GUI. When I created the LV that I plan to use for root partition of the new VM (Bacteria) I
