C8 install problems
Hi all,
I am trying to install C8 from a DVD I made onto a 1Tb disc partitioned into 2 ext4 partitions.
The first partition contains C7 which I installed via a DVD.
Trying to install C8 yields an error indicating the file /dev/root is missing.
I've checked the SHA256 sum for the ISO for CentOS 8.1 1911 and it checks out fine.
I've burned a couple of different DVDs and get the same

Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 and 1TB Seagate Barracuda ES.2
Hi all,
I''m getting a very strange problem with a recent OpenSolaris b134 install.
System is:
Supermicro X5DP8-G2 BIOS 1.6a
2x Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 1.0b
11 Seagate Barracuda 1TB ES.2 ST31000340NS drives
If I have any of the 11 1TB Seagate drives plugged into the controller,
the AOC-SAT2-MV8 BIOS appears to detect them just fine, but I get the
following problems:
1. Grub takes a

Karanbir,
PLEASE!
You've never responded to my question about whitelisting. That asinine
nixspam did it to me again, and this time... seriously, I urge you,
personally, to go there and try to remove a site. They've "enhanced
their security", that is, mangling the capchas, to the point that it
took me about five minutes or more, and about a dozen or 15 challenges,
before I

bad seagate drive?
Hi list,
I''ve got a system with 3 WD and 3 seagate drives. Today I got an email
that zpool status indicated one of the seagate drives as REMOVED.
I''ve tried clearing the error but the pool becomes faulted again. Taken
out the offending drive and plugged into a windows box with seatools
install. Unfortunately seatools finds nothing wrong with the drive.
Windows seems to see

GRUB woes: GRUB Hard Disk Error
Hello all,
I am attempting to install CentOS 5.5 on a recently donated home server (was
Windows). I've tried installing twice; first, separating /boot, swap, /,
/var, /usr and /home into different partitions, the second time choosing
default layout. Both times have resulted in "GRUB Hard Disk Error" upon
boot.
About the hard disk, it is a Seagate SATA drive. I do not have another

USB external HDD error messages
Hi - relatively inexperienced user here. I installed CentOS 5.2
yesterday (http install via a mirror, worked brilliantly), as well as a
new Seagate 1Tb USB external HDD (from the new Xtreme line), for
backup/media storage.
Using fdisk I put two primary partitions on the Seagate, /dev/sde1 and
/dev/sde2 (roughly half the drive each). Then I used mkfs.ext3 on both
to create ext3 filesystems

External Backup Systems?
Hey everyone,
My home server just had a disk failure a few weeks ago and like a lot of
people I haven't ever really made backups on a regular basis. So I was
looking into backup solutions which will save me from this situation
again.
Now I have Bacula setup, and backing up my files onto my home server.
Although this works great, I have one issue: The disk in my server was
the one that

VOIP Providers Problems
you guys are so friggin funny..
all i see bout problems on most providers here are users who never
read a line of the handbook
i could prolly solve all these eyes closed with the asterisk handbook
on my side as a friend.
wake up..
i work for a hosting provider and we get lots of users assuming they
have it all right and us is the problem. and in fact 99% of the time
they are the ones who

Hard drive errors
One of my CentOS boxes has started giving me errors. The box is
CentOS-4.4 (i386) fully updated. It has a pair of SATA drives in a
software raid 1 configuration.
The errors I see are:

Actual complaining: nixspam
John accused me of complaining about systemd... this here's *real*
complaining.
Several times every month, my email starts getting bounced by freakin'
nixspam, because my giant hosting provider, that hosts millions of
domains. Akemi has argued that nixspam works just fine (if so, then why
did we get that spam a few weeks ago?).
I've politely requested being put on a whitelist, and

Resilver/scrub times?
Hi all!
I''ve decided to take the "big jump" and build a ZFS home filer (although it
might also do "other work" like caching DNS, mail, usenet, bittorent and so
forth). YAY! I wonder if anyone can shed some light on how long a pool scrub
would take on a fairly decent rig. These are the specs as-ordered:
Asus P5Q-EM mainboard
Core2 Quad 2.83 GHZ
8GB DDR2/80

DRBD very slow....
Hello all,
we have a new setup with xen on centos5.3
I run drbd from lvm volumes to mirror data between the two servers.
both servers are 1U nec rack mounts with 8GB RAM, 2x mirrored 1TB
seagate satas.
The one is a dual core xeon, and the other a quad-core xeon.
I have a gigabit crossover link between the two with an MTU of 9000 on
each end.
I currently have 6 drbds mirroring across that

Resliver making the system unresponsive
This must be resliver day :)
I just had a drive failure. The hot spare kicked in, and access to the pool over NFS was effectively zero for about 45 minutes. Currently the pool is still reslivering, but for some reason I can access the file system now.
Resliver speed has been beaten to death I know, but is there a way to avoid this? For example, is more enterprisy hardware less susceptible to

Best 1.5TB drives for consumer RAID?
Which consumer-priced 1.5TB drives do people currently recommend?
I had zero read/write/checksum errors so far in 2 years with my trusty old Western Digital WD7500AAKS drives, but now I want to upgrade to a new set of drives that are big, reliable and cheap.
As of Jan 2010 it seems the price sweet spot is the 1.5TB drives.
As I had a lot of success with Western Digital drives I thought I would

CD 2 for Install Fails - Garritan Instruments for Finale
I am new to Wine and having a problem loading the second CD when installing software. I am installing Finale 2008 (music software) which comes with a library of sampled instruments that install from the first, second, and third CD. The main Finale install goes without a hitch and I have tested it a little and it seems to work.
However when installing the Garritan Instruments, it ejects the

RAID help
Hi All,
I have a new system with 2 Seagate 1TB SATA Enterprise level drives in it.
I want to RAID1 (mirror) these drives.
This machine will be a web-server in my apartment hosting an HTML video fan site I am creating. Apache, MySQL, PHP etc. This site will easily be 300+ gigs with all the versions of each video, the MySQL won't be huge, but will grow as data for each video is added (i.e
