more software raid questions
hi all! back in Aug several of you assisted me in solving a problem where one of my drives had dropped out of (or been kicked out of) the raid1 array. something vaguely similar appears to have happened just a few mins ago, upon rebooting after a small update. I received four emails like this, one for /dev/md0, one for /dev/md1, one for /dev/md125 and one for /dev/md126: Subject: DegradedArray

Centos 5.8: starting firefox-16.0.1 kills X
This just started happening this evening. a little history: way back last year, or thereabouts, I posted about a weird problem I was having. over the course of 2 or 3 days I figured out how to fix it, but not what the cause was. the fix amounts to navigating to my user's .local/share/mime directory and removing the file named "globs". So, back in the present: this evening that

doing a new install on top of existing software raid-1
Hi all! One of these days I'm going to upgrade my centos 5.7 box (which is currently configured with raid-1 on two drives) to 6.x. i've been given to believe that I should be able to do a fresh install on top of the existing raid setup, i.e., without having to re-create the raid array, but just use the existing setup. and somewhere in the last few days (in this list I think) someone

installing C7 on a laptop with Win7, dual boot
Hi all! I've just installed C7 on my netbook that already contained Win7 (and also Fedora 19, which the C7 is intended to replace). The Fedora installer had found the windows installation and it appeared in the grub menu, and was bootable and worked fine. The C7 installer did not put the windows installation into the grub menu. with some googling I found a page at

Using LVM to implement RAID
Hi, in Cent OS 7 after a power on, I experienced multiple errors in the device-mapper mirror: device lookup error and EXT4-fs error_lookup 1437 deleted inode reference I assume these are the VMs Is this always going to happen when I reboot the system? Will I experience data loss or corruption from this? Best, Stephen

RAID problem when building new computer
Hi all! I'm building up a new box and plan to use Centos 5 on it. i've got a pair of SATA 320 GB drives to make a RAID1. I'm trying to follow the "howto" on the centos wiki for making a "partitionable RAID" installation. Given that my partition scheme has a separate /boot partition, while the one in the HOWTO apparently does not, I've had to tweak the steps

bizarre firefox/X11 problem on centos 5.3
I set up a Centos5 box at work a week or two ago. Today I had this bizarre, repeatable problem: fire up firefox 3.5.1, browse to centos.org, go to the wiki, click the HOWTO button at the top of the page, and either at that point, or a moment later when clicking the link for the RAID documents, KABOOOOMMM!!! X dies and you return to a login prompt. I did it at least three times. Not nice when I

sqlinux weirdness
Every now and then I get an alert like this one. I have no clue what this "rear" subsystem is, or why madam would be trying to write to its log file. Can anyone enlighten me? thanks in advance! ------------------------- SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/mdadm from write access on the file /var/log/rear/rear-fcshome.log.lockless. ***** Plugin restorecon (93.9 confidence) suggests

another bizarre thing...
Hi all! I'm stuck on something really bizarre that is happening to a product I "own" at work. It's a C program, built on CentOS, runs on CentOs or RHEL, has been in circulation since the early 00's, is in use at hundreds of sites. recently, at multiple customer sites it has started just going away. no core file (yes, ulimit is configured), nothing in any of its (several)

RH software collections
Off topic, since it is a RH question, but I'm hoping someone here can point me to the right place to pursue this: We need an official RH build of nginx that contains the lua module(s), but the nginx builds in the rh scl repository do not. So, I'm looking for how to make an appropriate contact to inquire if RH could add lua to their current nginx build for the software collections I

Using LVM to implement RAID
It's a matter of user space tools preference. Both mdadm, and lvm tools use the Linux md driver code to implement RAID on the backend; but have completely different user facing tools and on-disk metadata. So it's best to be familiar with the troubleshooting and recovery process for each more than create, because that's where people get into trouble the most with both sets of tools.

mounting CDROM without mapaping UC to LC
Hi! this is surely a newbie question, so I should know the answer, but I'm fighting with mounting a CD such that filenames are NOT mapped to lowercase (I need to use its on-board tools for accessing files on it while mounted on Centos 6.5, and those tools assume uppercawse, since they assume the entire world runs Windoze.) but despite my best efforts, it keeps being mounted with UC-LC
