Back to Xfce
Nicolas, Thank you!? But I am Dyslexic and very mono-linguistic; at least I could read the actual commands, if not all the wonderful comments... CentOS 7.5 (1804) and NetworkManager
Hi, I'm running CentOS on all kinds of setups: servers, workstations, desktops and laptops. Up until now, I'm only using NetworkManager on laptops, since it makes sense to use it there. On servers and desktop clients, I usually remove it and configure the network "traditionally" by simply editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-whatever, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts,

Back to Xfce
Now that the basic server is up and running.? With Gnome via VNC (yuck), it is time to go back and figure out howto install Xfce without an Xfce group script.? So I am asking those with X64 Centos for some pointers.? Like where are the group scripts so maybe I can modify them for armhfp. I was reading: https://www.rootusers.com/how-to-install-xfce-gui-in-centos-7-linux/ Where the author

Requirements for building source RPM's?
Hi, I have CentOS 4.3. On install, I chose the 'Personal Desktop' option without bothering about customizing. I'm on dialup, so I try to choose a mixture of rpm and yum, e. g. I do 'yum install something', take a peek at what is needed, and then install as much as I can from the CD's using rpm -ivh. I want to build an app (cdlabelgen and its frontend gtkcdlabel) from a

"core" package groups
Hi, One nice thing I have with Debian is the possibility to have a really stripped-down install of things. Let's take an example. I want a cholesterol-free install of GNOME, I 'apt-get install gnome-core' which gives me the bare working minimum of GNOME as a starting point, and then I install what I really need. The same thing applies for KDE, with 'apt-get install

Easy way to strip down CentOS?
Hi, I wonder if there's an easy way to strip down an installation to the bare minimum, e. g. the packages you get when you select "minimum installation". In Slackware, the bone-headed package manager slackpkg has a few nice options, among which 'slackpkg clean-system', which removes all third-party packages in one single operation, or 'slackpkg remove

Strange problem with CentOS 7 and guest additions in VirtualBox
Hi, I'm having a very weird problem with CentOS as a VirtualBox guest. Let me explain it step by step. tl;dr: I can install VirtualBox Guest Additions and configure a fullscreen 1280x1024 graphical resolution on a full install, but not on a reduced install with a lightweight window manager. Here's what I did. 1. Install vanilla CentOS 7 with KDE. 2. Boot to reduced 1024x768

CentOS 6 yum Groupinstall vs Manual install
Gentlemen, I have a question regarding yum groupinstall vs just using yum install. I have been reading tutorials online (for example how to run a Centos LAMP). Most of the tutorials have examples to install httpd, mysql, etc using yum install httpd.... The reason for this e-mail is that I noticed in yum grouplist that there is an option to install Web Server, MySQL database server, etc.

Help with yum
I just did a fresh minimal install of centos 7 on new hardware. While playing around with window systems I removed X windows like so: >yum remove "X Window system" and then tried to re install >yum group install "X Window system" which gives this error: Maybe run: yum groups mark install (see man yum) No packages in any requested group available to install or

1) Power off 2) Automatic updates with GNOME
Hi, 1) When I'm doing a server install as well as a desktop install, I always start from a minimal install, then add components as needed. Now I noticed that on a minimal system (no X11, no GNOME), when doing either 'halt' or 'shutdown -h now', the machine halts... but doesn't switch off the power. The user has to do it manually. (I vaguely remember that on older
