Postgreql 8
Thank you for the information. We are starting a new project on a
dedicated development server. We therefore are looking at designing
for v.8 from the outset, anticipating that this will be the common
production version by the time the project is completed.
I had previously built an early v8 release of Postgresql on CentOS 4,
but that machine suffered a catastrophic disk failure and the

gnome-desktop on Centos-6.3
I have installed a minimal kvm host system. I wish to provide a
graphical login on the host. To this end I performed the following
group installs:
yum groupinstall "general purpose desktop" "x windows system"
I can login on the host system as root and then run 'startx' which
gives me a desktop, sort of. The top menu bar with the various tool
sets is missing as is

Help with gnome terminal
I am experiencing a problem with gnome terminal, most likely caused by
something that I have done and which I need to undo.
The problem is that somehow the gnome configuration has been changed so
that the "Contents" menu item under "Help" in Gnome Terminal has the
character "space" mapped as a keyboard accelerator. I would prefer that
this be mapped to just about

Gnome desktop, workspaces and windows
I was editing a file in gvim when I inadvertently pressed some key combination
that caused the vim window to disappear from the desktop. I looked in ps and
found that it was still running. Checking the tool bar at the bottom of my
display I noticed that a large rectangle now occupied the second of four boxes
on the extreme right hand side. Clicking on that box brought back the gvim
instance but

Gnome terminal oddity
I have the following gnome terminal profile settings:
Backspace = ASCII DEL
Delete Key = Escape Sequence
If the logged in session in the terminal window is my own user id
then the delete key does nothing. If however, I su -l in the same
terminal window then the delete key removes the character under the
cursor and left shifts the rest of the line.
I am fairly confident that the delete

Non-gnome desktops on CentOS-7
Is there a writeup somewhere detailing how one installs a non-gnome desktop?
I have installed both KDE and Mate and both fail with the same error. (EE) no
screens found.
I am a bit bewildered that neither the official KDE from centos nor the
semi-official mate from epel pull in as part of their install the Xserver. I
am also bothered by the fact that installing a desktop other than gnome 3

Gnome Desktop Questions?
I have a couple of oddities that I hope someone here can clarify for me.
OS = CentOS-5.2 all updates applied to date.
1. On the gnome desktop in the top panel (or menu bar) I have an icon for
"System Monitor" which runs the application "gnome-system-monitor". On my
other desktop CentOS-5.2 system I have the same thing. However, one one
system the icon gives me a real time

Gnome Desktop Screensaver Security Lock Override?
We deployed our first CentOS-4 based workstation this past spring to see
if we can conveniently replace all, or at least most, of our MS-Win based
user systems with Linux boxes instead. Generally this trial unit has
proved a success but there is one lingering problem that I cannot seem to
find a straight-forward answer to: Is there an administrator override to a
user's password protected

CentOS6 - Stop NUX Skype auto-start with gnome desktop
How does one configure Skype/Gnome such that one can have Skype
installed but not auto-start when the Gnome desktop opens?
I have looked in the 'System/Preferences/Startup Applications' menu
but Skype is not listed there. There are no options in the
Application itself that allow this setting either.
If there no other way then I will remove the application package and
re-install when I

OT - How does the blind transfer function work on Snom-870?
I am trying to determine how the transfer button on the Snom-870 works
with Asterisk. Is the ## special code employed as when it is entered
through the handset or is the blind transfer through the phone
function accomplished in a different fashion?

Installing a gnome-desktop on CENTOS-6.3 following minimal system install.
I am still trying without much success to get a desktop on my minimal
+ virtualization install of a CentOS-6.3 kvm host. When I run startx
I get a desktop but other than the icons for computer, home and trash
there is nothing displayed. I can right click the mouse and from
there I can open a terminal window and creat a folder on the desktop
but I have no title bar and no status bar. There are

You might take a look at the gsettings utility.

Starting a java applet from the desktop
CentOS-5.4 i86_64
I have a calculator applet on my desktop (superbcalc.jar). When I
double click on it I get no response. If I right click and select
open with java I get no response. If I open a terminal window and
cd to Desktop and type java -jar superbcalc.jar then the applet
opens.
Does anyone have any idea why I am seeing this behaviour? There are
