totem fails to open .wmv file
Hey All,
Totem has stopped playing .wmv files recently. I don't know exactly
when this happened, but I know I've played .wmv files not too very long
ago. I've got 372 .wmv files all of which I've played at one time.
When I try to launch any one of the .wmv files from file manager totem
pops up but the controls are not functional.
If I start totem from a terminal there is no

Samba Print Share Problem
I had my samba printer shares working after many hours of struggling
with the samba.conf file. I was happy.
Now the printer shares have quit working. I checked the yum log to see
if anything had been changed. Nothing applicable seems to have been
changed.
I've been surfing the net for the last couple of days trying to find a
solution to the problem but I find many outdated and

Desperate plea for help with printer share
Hey Y'all,
I've been trying for months to get samba to share my printer with my
wife's Win XP machine. I've RTFM, and spent hours on google to no avail.
I can't see the printer from Windows so I can't mount it up. Nothing
appears in the logs. The file shares work just fine.
It looks like I've got Samba 3.6.9 on this machine:

What's up with Firefox/Thundrebird
Hey All,
Has anyone had trouble with Firefox/Thunderbird?
When I log on if I start Thunderbird first then I can't start Firefox.
Clicking on a link in an email fails to start Firefox.
If I start Firefox before Thunderbird then hyperlinks in emails open a
page in the existing Firefox instance.
Other users on this same machine are having the same problems.
This has been happening for that

scp -rp behavior
Hey all,
I'm trying to copy configuration files from my old CentOS 6.6 32 bit
machine to my new CentOS 6.6 64 bit machine.
On my 32 bit machine:
[mlapier at mushroom ~]$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:19:DB:E5:4E:9F
inet addr:192.168.15.105
When I issue this command on my new 64 bit machine, 192.168.15.101:

Thunderbird randomly segfaults at startup
I haven't seen this, but I'm curious if it has something to do with
your configuration. What I would suggest trying is working from a clean
config.
mv ~/.thunderbird ~/.thunderbird.backup
Try it like that. If it starts correctly, then it is your config and
you'll probably have to recreate your config to make it work. If it
doesn't, then rename

Sound Stutters and Sputters then dies
Hey Y'all,
Recently my sound has been misbehaving. The issue exists when I play
sound using Rhythmbox, Totem Movie Player, or even Youtube video in
Firefox or Chrome. The sound stutters and drops out. Sounds very
rough. On Youtube the sound will eventually just die and can not be
restarted until the browser is shut down and restarted.
I've had issues related to Repo Forge

abrt relevance?
I am trying to understand the relevance of the abrt program. It pops up
automatically when somethings acts up, but I can't submit anything to RH,
because I haven't paid their fees. It is a very bad user experience to go
through the whole process of describing what led up to the problem and get
to the end of the process and be rejected with an un-fixable error message
(because I

Host does not respond to nmap
Hey Y'all,
I just set up a new old machine on my network. I did a net install of
CentOS 6.7 on it replacing an outdated copy of Win XP. Of course I'm
now in the throws of configuring the machine to be a useful member of
society.

Check out the redirection at the end of each command. 1>&2 redirects
the standard out of your child command to the standard error which then
appears in the parent shell. At the end the last & launches your
command into a background shell and then moves on to launch the next
command. The redirections don't care if the command ever terminates.
The result is that both commands

Extract lines from text file
Hi,
I'm looking for a command to extract lines from a large text file, a
password file. A typical user has a username made from a letter
followed by their id-number.
m9718508:pw:9301:840: Lynch :/home/pgstud/m9718508:/bin/bash
So for instance if I need to extract lines where;
the 1st field, the username begins with an m
and
the 4th field, the group contains exactly 850
