no longer goes to standby when lid is closed
since I got the big bolus of updates from the CR repo a few days ago my netbook (AcerAspire One D255E) will no longer go to standby when the lid is closed. This was a Gnome desktopp installation with theh MATE desktop fromm EPEL. I've verified that the correct setting still exists in power manager but it persists in continuing to run when the lid closes. it WILL go to standby if explicitly

updates issue
Since doing "yum update" this morning, an update that installed several packages, the updater shows me 3 packages to install: hpijs-1:3.12.4-4.el6_4.1 (x86_64) hplip-common-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1 (x86_64) hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6_4.1 (x86_64) but when I attempt to actually run the update I get: hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6.i686 requires libsane.so.1 hplip-libs-3.12.4-4.el6.i686 requires

WPA question
HI I admit up front that I know just enough about wireless networking to know that I don't know much at all about it. That said, I'm hoping someone can help me learn a little bit... Specifically, could a laptop running Centos 5.1 be expected to (be able to) connect to a wireless access point using WPA2 security settings? I don't know if WPA depends on hardware support, or if

Hyperthreaded CPU and SMP kernel
Hi gang! I'm using Centos 4.4 at work on a HP Proliant DL320 G2, which has a Hypterthreaded Pentium IV CPU. I used to use RHEL WS 2.1 on it, and RH installed and used the SMP kernel. Centos 4.4 did NOT install the SMP kernel. Is there some reason why I should NOT install it myself? I.e., some reason why an SMP kernel shouldn't be used on such a machine? Gracias! -- ---- Fred Smith --

Strange sound/browser problem on Centos5
I just did (the other day) a clean install of Centos 5 and am having a really weird problem that I never had before (on centos 4.5). when listening to nrk p2 (http://www.nrk.no/p2/) using Firefox, and when the small window for the player gets obscured by another window the sound stops playing. Move the obscuring window and it starts right up. I haven't yet been able to tell if it is paused,

centos 6 (what else? :) :)
Hi all! My thanks to the Centos team for continuing to slave away on C6 even with all the distractions!!! Just did a test install on my eeepc 901 (on an external drive, til I'm comfortable with it) and find that it doesn't seem to know how to talk to the ralink 2860 wireless chipset. A few months back I did a test install of Scientific Linux 6 and as I recall it (I may be

Sound problem, possibly Mate Volume Control
Hi all! In the last day or two (on Centos 7)the speaker icon in the Mate top panel, which normally drops down to a volume control, has stopped working. what does "stopped working" mean? It means when I drop down the volume slider and slide it, it makes no difference at all in the output volume. if I right-click that icon, it'll open up "Sound Preferences", which appears

Google Earth on EL6.x x86_64
Has anyone gotten 64-bit google earth to run on el6 x86_64? It dies almost immediately, complaining for lack of ld-lsb.so.3. Perusing user forums at google I see a few others with the problem, but no (working) solutions. running .jar files on Centos 7
OT!!!!! I'm trying to learn to use audio cleanup tools from clickrepair.net. they're written in Java and distributed as .jar files. I'm having trouble running them, due, I'm sure, largely to my ignorance. I have icedtea installed, but it just errors out when I try to use it to run any of the jar files: Fatal: Read Error: Could not read or parse the JNLP file. You can try to

using NUT on centos 5
Hi! Trying to set up NUT on Centos 5 to monitor a CyberPower 1500AVR UPS. There seem to be many documents, all of which seem to be not fully consistent with each other, and most of them aren't up to date. I'm guessing I should be using udev rather than hal, but I'm somewhat stumped on how to figure out what device it should be monitoring. there are a bunch of udev rules installed

Folding At Home
Hey Y'all, I have the Stanford University Folding At Home project running on three of my machines. I had them all set up so that I could control them all from my main machine, 192.168.15.101, but some time ago something changed so that I can no longer connect to the FAH clients on the other two machines. I figured it wasn't really important so I would look into it later. Well time has
