KVM guest fails to boot cleanly
I have a KVM vm running CentOS-6.8 on a host also running CentOS-6.8. This instance is used for occasional development projects which require segregation. Thus it is seldom accessed. At some point in the recent past this guest developed an issue with starting. Specifically these messages were found in the system log files: /var/log/messages-20170312:Mar 10 16:31:06 vhost04 kernel: dracut:

Setting PS1 for ordinary users
CentOS-6 When I login as root I see this prompt: [root at vhost04 ~]# When I login as a non-priviledged user I see this instead: sh-4.1$ .bashrc and .bash_profile have identical contents in /root and /home/user. What causes the difference? Why? How does one change the default so that all normal users get a [userid at hostname pwd]$ prompt? I have loked in/etc/profile.d and /etc/bashrc

Installing a gnome-desktop on CENTOS-6.3 following minimal system install.
I am still trying without much success to get a desktop on my minimal + virtualization install of a CentOS-6.3 kvm host. When I run startx I get a desktop but other than the icons for computer, home and trash there is nothing displayed. I can right click the mouse and from there I can open a terminal window and creat a folder on the desktop but I have no title bar and no status bar. There are

print something on console after boot
CentOS 7 How do I print something on the text-mode console right after the OS has finished booting? I've a virtual instance and I need to know its IP address after it has finished booting up, to know where to ssh into it. I've tried adding "ip -4 addr > /dev/tty0" to rc.local, but that obviously doesn't work, because the login prompt overwrites everything I do. --

And now for something completely different. Win7 on KVM
As you can probably guess by now I am working my way down through my outstanding issue list trying to get as many deferred items closed out as I can before the next security storm hits. We have a Win7pro KVM guest that has been giving us networking issues since it was created. The last problem was that it was picking up its network address from the virtio DHCP service, with predicable results.

Console access to kvm guest running WindowsV7
i86_64 CentOS-6.5 I have installed a Windows instance as a kvm guest on a host running CentOS-6.5. I can access the desktop through the virt-manager console and everythign seems to work, although the mouse cursor seems to get lost from time to time. The virt-manager console display supports various resolutions but when I re-size the desktop display remains essentially a square inside a letter

KVM kernel panic when additional virtio disks added
CentOS-6.6 virt-manager 0.9.0 I have cloned a template server with a 32GB virtio HDD already defined and am attempting to add additional virtio disks. The basic cloned system boots without error. If I create a virtio disk with 32000/32000 megabytes I can add it and the system reboots; providing that I do not first create a partition: fdisk -l /dev/vg_vhost03/lv_vm_inet11.harte-lyne.ca_03

This seems to me to be getting down to some sort of problem with configuring the Snom-870. when I register the device 41712 (set up for transport=tls only) then I see this in the SIP trace: Sent to udp:192.168.6.9:5060 at 4/3/2015 09:07:36:813 (836 bytes): REGISTER sip:voinet09.internal.hamilton.harte-lyne.ca:5061 SIP/2.0 Via: SIP/2.0/UDP 192.168.6.112:5060;branch=z9hG4bK-udx92poqese6;rport
