[PATCH 4/4] v2v: Pass CPU vendor, model and topology from source to target.
Where supported, pass the source CPU vendor, model and topology to the
target hypervisor.
For -i ova, we can get just cores per socket via a proprietary VMware
extension to OVF.
For -i libvirt and from virt-p2v, we can get all of these fields from
the libvirt XML.
For -o libvirt/local, we can preserve all of the information in the
target XML.
For -o glance, as far as I can tell from the

[PATCH] v2v: rework handling of CPU topology
Instead of storing the number of sockets, cores, and threads separately
with the possibility to have each of them optional, store them together,
so either we have a CPU topology or none. This slightly simplifies the
handling of CPU topology.
Most of the output modes/producers already considered a missing
information of a topology as "1" when any of the other was specified, so

Re: why increasing vCPUs increasing the CPU sockets for QEMU+KVM
Hi Daniel,
Thanks a lot for the quick and detailed explanation. Please see my another

Windows Guest ignores CPU topology settings on Ubuntu Lucid host
I try to assign 8 host cores to Windows 2003 Server Standard guest.
Because this OS version has a limit of 4 sockets, I have to change the
CPU topology. My guest definition:
<vcpu>8</vcpu>
<cpu match='minimum'>
<model>core2duo</model>
<topology sockets='4' cores='1' threads='2'/>
</cpu>
doesn't

AW: VCPU amount
Hi,
I don''t want to hijack this thread. But as I lately posted a question which
mainly was about weight and cap and this fits in perfectly (and also you seem
to be an expert here), I repeat it below.
In the meantime I saw an academic article Ludmilla Cherkasova et al. from which
I understood that you have to careful that a Dom0 doesn''t get too much weight,
as otherwise

[PATCH 1/4] p2v: Pass host CPU details to virt-v2v.
In the fake <domain type='physical'> libvirt XML that we create to
describe the physical host, we did not accurately pass any information
about the host CPU except the number of cores (<vcpu/>).
This commit extracts detailed information about the vendor, model and
topology of the host CPU and adds that to the libvirt XML for
virt-v2v. Conveniently we can use libvirt

vcpu performance : 1 vcpu for all guets or 4 vpcu ?
Hello all ;)
Tell I have a Xeon server with 4 vcpus
If on this box I have some guets, tell 10, what is the best solutions :
- Set all guests to 1 vcpu ?
- Set all guests to 4 vcpus ?
I well understand that if I set a guest with 4 vcpus and all others only
with one vpcus, then the one with 4 vcpus will have more "cpu time"
available than others guests.
But in case I''d like

How to activate all VPCUS for a domU?
Hi,
I have set maxvcpus and vcpus options in my domU configuration file, and I
can see that X number of vcpu are set for the domU.
I tried to activate all the vpcus by using vpcu_avail option (using decimal
to represent vpcu bitmask e.g. 24=11000) but it doesn''t seem to work, and
only the first vpcu is activated (i.e. has -b- state) while all other
vpcu''s set for the domU are

why increasing vCPUs increasing the CPU sockets for QEMU+KVM
Hi All,
I am new here, please warn me If I am not following proper etiquette of
this mailing list.
I am breaking my head, regarding why libvirt is defining multiple CPU
sockets when I increase the vCPU count. As and when I increase the vCPU
count in libvirt guest XML, it is increasing the CPU sockets in qemu
instance.
