rsync --delete with empty source folder for fast snapshot deletion: Permissions of hardlinked files are changed to 644. Workaround?
Context

I am one of the active developers of the open source application "Back in Time"
which uses "rsync" as backend and I want to fix an open issue:

"Back in Time" uses "--link-dest" to reduce traffic and storage by hardlinking

Excellent idea using kernel sources! A lot of different files...
I will use this to create indicative benchmarks for different scenarios...

snapshot troubles
Dear all,
I created some snapshots, a long time ago, using the xml description
option, so the snapshots have a name with a space in it...
Really a bad choice apparently, since it seems impossible to delete them
now: I cannot find how to enter the snapshot name properly due to the
space. Quotes don't seem to help; escaping the space doesn't help either.
Anybody knows how to solve this?

Find the difference between two snapshots
Hi everyone,
Is there an easy way to find out which files has changed between two
snapshots? Currently I''m doing a
# rsync -arvn <snapshot1> <snapshot2>
and it creates a list. But rsync needs to go through the whole
filesystem and compare files. It would be nice if zfs would have this
option builtin.

Qemu 2.x on CentOS 7?
Is there any way to get the latest Qemu to run on CentOS 7? I'm looking
for a way to create backup snapshots, but the current install says:
[root at vhost1 ~]# virsh snapshot-create-as myvm snapshot1 "snapshot1
description"
error: Operation not supported: live disk snapshot not supported with

libvirt error messages
Hello,
I am experimenting with libvirt for my diploma. I set up an environment,
where I can stop, resend, generate messages for libvirt.
I am capable also standing between client and server and analyze the number
of current procedure and decide what to do next ( I mean rpc procedure).
So, for example I want to always drop creating snapshots and send an error
to client with my custom message (NOT

ZFS receive issue running multiple receives and rollbacks
Hi, all,
Environment: S10U3 running as VMWare Workstation 6 guest; Fedora 7 is
the VMWare host, 1 GB RAM
I''m creating a solution in which I need to be able to save off state on
one host, then restore it on another. I''m using ZFS snapshots with ZFS
receive and it''s all working fine, except for some strange behavior when
I perform multiple rollbacks and receives.

Question, how to coorelate snapshot ID's to the files that they represent?
Hi folks, first post :)
I'm running Redhat 6 x64 with ibvirt-0.10.2-18 and qemu-img-rhev-0.12.1.2-2.355
My question is, if I do something like the following..
[root@testbox ~]# virsh snapshot-list STIGtest
Name Creation Time State

Unable to convert vm
I am unable to convert a vm using virt-v2v. From the trace and debug
logs I am unable to understand the cause of the problem. I assume it is
a permission or configuration issue but I don't know where to start looking.
The following command was issued:
LIBGUESTFS_TRACE=1 LIBGUESTFS_DEBUG=1 virt-v2v -ic
qemu+ssh://xxx at 192.168.xxx.xxx/system -o rhev -os

Live snapshots of a single block device
Hello,
I am working on a script to automatically create live snapshots of running VMs using qemu-kvm 1.4.0 and libvirt 1.0.2. If a VM has multiple disks, I'd like to back them up individually with separate calls to snapshot-create-as, so I can more easily manage the disk images. The code I have now is essentially as follows:
virsh snapshot-create-as --domain "vmname" --name

Wishlist items
I''ve been saving up a few wishlist items for zfs. Time to share.
1. A verbose (-v) option to the zfs commandline.
In particular zfs sometimes takes a while to return from zfs snapshot -r
tank/volumes at foo in the case where there are a great many iscsi shared
volumes underneath. A little progress feedback would go a long way. In
general I feel the zfs tools lack sufficient feedback

rsync --delete with empty source folder for fast snapshot deletion: Permissions of hardlinked files are changed to 644. Workaround?
So I decided to do a quick test using the Linux kernel source tree since
it has lots of files. I duplicated a tree, used 'find . -type f -exec
chmod 444 {} +' to make read only files for rsync to want to chmod, then
used cp -al to make several duplicate trees using hard linked files. An
rm -rf on one such tree took .97 seconds while an rsync deletion took
1.25 seconds. Clearly I

how "safe" is blockcommit ?
Hi,
currently i'm following https://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Live-disk-backup-with-active-blockcommit. I 'm playing around with it and it seems to be quite nice.
What i want is a daily consistent backup of my image file of the guest.
I have the idea of the following procedure:
- Shutdown the guest (i can live with a downtime of a few minutes, it will happen in the night).
And i think

rsync --delete with empty source folder for fast snapshot deletion: Permissions of hardlinked files are changed to 644. Workaround?
I had intended to come back to this but because I didn't really think I
had anything to add to the discussion I put it at a low enough priority
that I forgot about it. But I saw your bug report and was surprised to
see that I was already unhelpful on this topic but because that original
poster didn't have access to do an rm while you are trying to get a
performance boost.
I have
