[nbdkit PATCH 03/10] filters: Wire up filter support for NBD_INFO_INIT_STATE
The NBD protocol is adding an extension to let servers advertise initialization state to the client: whether the image contains holes, and whether it is known to read as all zeroes. Most filters just pass through the plugin's result (as it is only checked once when first connecting), but we can do useful things in log (mention the setting), extentlist (answer based on the extents we are

[nbdkit PATCH 05/10] plugins: Wire up file-based plugin support for NBD_INFO_INIT_STATE
The NBD protocol is adding an extension to let servers advertise initialization state to the client: whether the image contains holes, and whether it is known to read as all zeroes. For file-based plugins, we are already probing lseek(SEEK_HOLE) to learn if extents are supported; a slight tweak to remember if that result is EOF tells us if we are sparse, and a similar lseek(SEEK_DATA) returning

[nbdkit PATCH v2 00/24] implement NBD_CMD_CACHE
Since v1: - rework .can_cache to be tri-state, with default of no advertisement (ripple effect through other patches) - add a lot more patches in order to round out filter support And in the meantime, Rich pushed NBD_CMD_CACHE support into libnbd, so in theory we now have a way to test cache commands through the entire stack. [nbdkit PATCH 0/9] RFC: implement NBD_CMD_CACHE
I'm still working my way through the filters before this series will be complete, but this is enough of a start to at least get some feedback on the idea of implementing another NBD protocol extension. Eric Blake (9): server: Internal hooks for implementing NBD_CMD_CACHE plugins: Add .cache callback file, split: Implement .cache with posix_fadvise nbd: Implement NBD_CMD_CACHE

[nbdkit PATCH 0/2] ext2 export list tweaks

cross-project patches: Add NBD Fast Zero support
This is a cover letter to a series of patches being proposed in tandem to four different projects: - nbd: Document a new NBD_CMD_FLAG_FAST_ZERO command flag - qemu: Implement the flag for both clients and server - libnbd: Implement the flag for clients - nbdkit: Implement the flag for servers, including the nbd passthrough client If you want to test the patches together, I've pushed a

[nbdkit PATCH v3 00/14] exportname filter
It's been several weeks since I posted v2 (I got distracted by improving libnbd to better test things, which in turn surfaced some major memory leak problems in nbdsh that are now fixed). Many of the patches are minor rebases from v2, with the biggest changes being fallout from: - patch 2: rename nbdkit_add_default_export to nbdkit_use_default_export - overall: this missed 1.22, so update

[nbdkit PATCH 0/5] More retry fixes
I think this is my last round of patches for issues I identified with the retry filter. With this in place, it should be safe to interject another filter in between retry and the plugin. Eric Blake (5): retry: Don't call into closed plugin tests: Refactor test-retry-reopen-fail.sh tests: Enhance retry test to cover failed reopen server: Move prepare/finalize/close recursion to

[nbdkit PATCH v2 0/6] Improve retry filter
Includes a rework of the previously posted patch for --run improvements (mostly with improved comments and commit message; I decided that waiting for the captive nbdkit to exit was overkill), and four new patches. The tests are intentionally separate, to allow rearranging the order of the series to see the failures being fixed. Eric Blake (6): server: Propagate unexpected nbdkit failure with

[nbdkit PATCH 0/9] can_FOO caching, more filter validation
It's easy to use the sh script to demonstrate that nbdkit is inefficiently calling into .get_size, .can_fua, and friends more than necessary. We've also commented on the list in the past that it would be nice to ensure that when filters call into next_ops, they are not violating constraints (as we've have to fix several bugs in the past where we did not have such checking to protect

[PATCH nbdkit v4 00/15] Implement Block Status.
I'm not sure exactly which version we're up to, but let's say it's version 4. I'm a lot happier with this version: - all filters have been reviewed and changed where I think that's necessary - can_extents is properly defined and implemented now - NBD protocol is followed - I believe it addresses all previous review points where possible The "only" thing

[PATCH nbdkit v5 FINAL 00/19] Implement extents.
This has already been pushed upstream. I am simply posting these here so we have a reference in the mailing list in case we find bugs later (as I'm sure we will - it's a complex patch series). Great thanks to Eric Blake for tireless review on this one. It also seems to have identified a few minor bugs in qemu along the way. Rich.

[nbdkit PATCH 10/10] plugins: Wire up nbd plugin support for NBD_INFO_INIT_STATE
The NBD protocol is adding an extension to let servers advertise initialization state to the client: whether the image contains holes, and whether it is known to read as all zeroes. With recent enough libnbd, the nbd plugin can pass this information through. [PATCH nbdkit] server: Implement extents/can_extents calls for plugins and filters.
Second version based on nbdkit_extent* calls, as discussed here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2019-March/msg00033.html Note in particular there is some subtlety about how filters would work in this implementation. See docs/nbdkit-filter.pod for the details. Rich.

[PATCH nbdkit v2] New filter: limit: Limit number of clients that can connect.
This is a second version of the limit filter. v1 was posted here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-March/msg00015.html I didn't bother to repost the other three patches because they are the same. The difference is this version of the filter takes security more seriously. It shouldn't be possible for malicious clients to connect more than limit=N times to the plugin now,

[nbdkit PATCH 0/3] Add noparallel filter
Being able to programmatically force nbdkit to be less parallel can be useful during testing. I was less sure about patch 3, but if you like it, I'm inclined to instead squash it into patch 1. This patch is written to apply after my NBD_CMD_CACHE work (since I touched the nocache filter); but can be rearranged if we think this series should go in first while that one undergoes any adjustments

[PATCH nbdkit 0/8] Implement extents using a simpler array.
Not sure what version we're up to, but this reimplements extents using the new simpler structure described in this thread: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2019-March/msg00077.html I also fixed most of the things that Eric pointed out in the previous review, although I need to go back over his replies and check I've got everything. This needs a bit more testing. However the

[nbdkit PATCH 0/5] Another round of retry fixes
I still don't have .prepare/.finalize working cleanly across reopen, but did find a nasty bug where a botched assertion means we failed to notice reads beyond EOF in both the xz and retry filter. Refactoring backend.c will make .finalize work easier. Eric Blake (5): xz: Avoid reading beyond EOF retry: Check size before transactions tests: Test retry when get_size values change
