[nbdkit PATCH 0/9] RFC: implement NBD_CMD_CACHE
I'm still working my way through the filters before this series will be complete, but this is enough of a start to at least get some feedback on the idea of implementing another NBD protocol extension. Eric Blake (9): server: Internal hooks for implementing NBD_CMD_CACHE plugins: Add .cache callback file, split: Implement .cache with posix_fadvise nbd: Implement NBD_CMD_CACHE

[nbdkit PATCH 0/2] More on .thread_model
Rich pointed out that making thread_model dynamic even for plugins makes some sense, so here is the code for doing it for 'sh'. I'm less confident on how to do it for OCaml and Rust (not to mention that those allow the plugin to already compile in their model, rather than the language binding glue forcing a model). The other languages (lua, perl, python, ruby) still need to be

[nbdkit PATCH 3/3] plugins: Add .can_fast_zero hook
Allow plugins to affect the handling of the new NBD_CMD_FLAG_FAST_ZERO flag, then update affected plugins. In particular, in-memory plugins are always fast; the full plugin is better served by omitting .zero and relying on .pwrite fallback; nbd takes advantage of libnbd extensions proposed in parallel to pass through support; and v2 language bindings expose the choice to their scripts. The

[nbdkit PATCH 0/2] More caching of initial setup
When I added .can_FOO caching in 1.16, I missed the case that the sh plugin itself was calling .can_flush twice in some situations (in order to default .can_fua). Then right after, I regressed it to call .can_zero twice (in order to default .can_fast_zero). I also missed that .thread_model could use better caching, because at the time, I did not add testsuite coverage. Fix that now. Eric Blake

[nbdkit PATCH v2 00/24] implement NBD_CMD_CACHE
Since v1: - rework .can_cache to be tri-state, with default of no advertisement (ripple effect through other patches) - add a lot more patches in order to round out filter support And in the meantime, Rich pushed NBD_CMD_CACHE support into libnbd, so in theory we now have a way to test cache commands through the entire stack. [nbdkit PATCH] nozero: Add notrim mode
It may be useful to test whether the client's use of NBD_CMD_FLAG_NO_HOLE makes a difference; do this by adding a mode to --filter=nozero to force a non-trimming zero write. [nbdkit PATCH 0/2] more fast zero prep
Another couple things I noticed that are worth improving, but aren't strictly related to implementing fast zero support. [nbdkit PATCH 0/5] Another round of retry fixes
I still don't have .prepare/.finalize working cleanly across reopen, but did find a nasty bug where a botched assertion means we failed to notice reads beyond EOF in both the xz and retry filter. Refactoring backend.c will make .finalize work easier. Eric Blake (5): xz: Avoid reading beyond EOF retry: Check size before transactions tests: Test retry when get_size values change

[nbdkit PATCH 0/5] More retry fixes
I think this is my last round of patches for issues I identified with the retry filter. With this in place, it should be safe to interject another filter in between retry and the plugin. [nbdkit PATCH 0/4] More work with retry safety
I'm still working on another set of patches to have reopen call .finalize/.prepare (so that another filter can safely appear between retry and the plugin), but for tonight, these are the patches I think are ready to go. Eric Blake (4): retry: Handle can_fua and can_fast_zero changes tests: Test retry with different fua/fast-zero flags server: Close backends if a filter's .open fails

[nbdkit PATCH v2 0/2] caching .can_write
This is a subset of the last half of the larger 9-patch series. The uncontroversial first half of that series is pushed, but here, I tried to reduce the size of the patches by splitting out some of the more complex changes, so that the rest of the changes remaining in the series are more mechanical. In turn, it forced me to write timing tests, which let me spot another spot where we are wasting

[PATCH nbdkit v2 0/3] server: Remove explicit connection parameter.
v1 was here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-February/msg00081.html v2 replaces struct connection *conn = GET_CONN; with GET_CONN; which sets conn implicitly and asserts that it is non-NULL. If we actually want to test if conn is non-NULL or behave differently, then you must use threadlocal_get_conn() instead, and some existing uses do that. Rich.

[PATCH nbdkit 0/3] server: Remove explicit connection parameter.
The third patch is a large but mechanical change which gets rid of passing around struct connection * entirely within the server, preferring instead to reference the connection through thread-local storage. I hope this is a gateway to simplifying other parts of the code. Rich.

[nbdkit PATCH 0/3] Make ext2 a filter
I'm impressed that I was able to whip this out in just one day of hacking. Below, I'll include a diff between the plugin and the filter as of patch 1, if it aids review. [PATCH nbdkit 1/3] server: Rename global backend pointer to "top".
It's confusing to use the same terminology for a single backend as for the linked list of backends. In particular it's often not clear if we're calling the next backend or the whole chain of backends. --- server/internal.h | 14 ++++++++++-- server/connections.c | 20 ++++++++--------- server/locks.c | 2 +- server/main.c

[nbdkit PATCH 0/3] Add noparallel filter
Being able to programmatically force nbdkit to be less parallel can be useful during testing. I was less sure about patch 3, but if you like it, I'm inclined to instead squash it into patch 1. This patch is written to apply after my NBD_CMD_CACHE work (since I touched the nocache filter); but can be rearranged if we think this series should go in first while that one undergoes any adjustments

Cross-project NBD extension proposal: NBD_INFO_INIT_STATE
I will be following up to this email with four separate threads each addressed to the appropriate single list, with proposed changes to: - the NBD protocol - qemu: both server and client - libnbd: client - nbdkit: server The feature in question adds a new optional NBD_INFO_ packet to the NBD_OPT_GO portion of handshake, adding up to 16 bits of information that the server can advertise to the

[nbdkit PATCH v3 00/15] Add FUA support to nbdkit
After more than a month since v2 [1], I've finally got my FUA support series polished. This is all of my outstanding patches, even though some of them were originally posted in separate threads from the original FUA post [2], [3] [1] https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-January/msg00113.html [2] https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-January/msg00219.html [3]

[nbdkit] [filter/nozero] large binary size with GCC 9
Hi all, It seems GCC 9 does not put read-only zero-initialized variables into the BSS section anymore; instead it is put into RODATA. (See the thread at [0], especially [1]) In filter/nozero a 64M large, static, zeroed, read-only array is declared. The new behavior of GCC puts this array as-is into the binary inflating the size by a factor of around 10000. (Clang 8 and older GCCs work
