[PATCH nbdkit] Add readahead filter.
A suggested readahead filter. I've only lightly tested this, but it seems to work fine with qemu-img convert. The commit needs proper tests. Rich.

[nbdkit PATCH 0/4] Start using cleanup macros in filters/plugins
There's more that can be done (in particular, use of CLEANUP_FREE), but this is enough to at least see if I'm on the right track. I couldn't figure out an obvious difference between common/include and common/utils, but it looks like the former is for things that are inlineable via .h only, while the latter is when you need to link in a convenience library, so this landed in the

[nbdkit PATCH 0/4] More mutex sanity checking
I do have a question about whether patch 2 is right, or whether I've exposed a bigger problem in the truncate (and possibly other) filter, but the rest seem fairly straightforward. [nbdkit PATCH v2 00/24] implement NBD_CMD_CACHE
Since v1: - rework .can_cache to be tri-state, with default of no advertisement (ripple effect through other patches) - add a lot more patches in order to round out filter support And in the meantime, Rich pushed NBD_CMD_CACHE support into libnbd, so in theory we now have a way to test cache commands through the entire stack. [nbdkit PATCH v2 0/6] Improve retry filter
Includes a rework of the previously posted patch for --run improvements (mostly with improved comments and commit message; I decided that waiting for the captive nbdkit to exit was overkill), and four new patches. The tests are intentionally separate, to allow rearranging the order of the series to see the failures being fixed. Eric Blake (6): server: Propagate unexpected nbdkit failure with

[PATCH nbdkit v2 0/4] Add new retry filter.
v1 was here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2019-September/msg00199.html v2: - Adds a fairly simple yet comprehensive test using sh plugin. - Rebase and retest. Patch 1 is a misc patch not really related to the series. Rich.

[PATCH nbdkit 0/2] Add new retry filter.
This is a retry filter implementation as outlined here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2019-September/msg00167.html It is only lightly tested. One way to test it is to try an SSH copy (see the commit message for patch 2/2), and in the middle of the copy kill the per-connection sshd on the remote machine. You will see that the copy recovers after a few seconds. Add the nbdkit -v

[PATCH nbdkit] filters: Add copy-on-write filter.
Eric, you'll probably find the design "interesting" ... It does work, for me at least. Rich.

[PATCH nbdkit filters-v2 0/5] Introduce filters.
Rebased filters patch. Requires current git master + the locks / thread model fix (https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-January/msg00128.html) So a few changes here since last time: The "introduce filters" and "implement filters" patches are squashed together. I introduced a concept of .prepare and .finalize. These run before and after the data serving phase

[PATCH nbdkit v3 0/3] Add new retry filter.
v2 was here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2019-September/msg00221.html I think this is more like "the one". It handles reopen failing correctly, and there is a second test for that. I also ran my sshd tests locally and it worked in all scenarios I could think up (except of course sshd not being available at the start, but we want that to fail). Rich.

[PATCH nbdkit filters-v3 0/7] Introduce filters.
This is still tentative and needs a lot of work, but: - partition filter works, supporting MBR & GPT - prepare and finalize methods fixed - open method can now be changed (allowing readonly flag to be modified) - thread_model can be limited I believe I made most of the changes which were previously suggested in email. I think the only one I didn't was preventing inclusion of both

[PATCH nbdkit 0/4] partition: Support MBR logical partitions.
This implements support for MBR logical partitions in nbdkit-partition-filter, complementing existing support in the partitioning plugin. Rich.

[nbdkit PATCH 0/3] Add nozero filter
I still need to add testsuite coverage. Perhaps it might be easier if I create a new '--filter=log logfile=foo' filter that produces a log of which commands a client sent, then compare the log using a known client that uses write_zeroes (qemu-io works well) both with and without --filter=nozero to prove that the change in advertisement changes the commands sent over the wire (that would

[nbdkit PATCH 0/9] can_FOO caching, more filter validation
It's easy to use the sh script to demonstrate that nbdkit is inefficiently calling into .get_size, .can_fua, and friends more than necessary. We've also commented on the list in the past that it would be nice to ensure that when filters call into next_ops, they are not violating constraints (as we've have to fix several bugs in the past where we did not have such checking to protect

nbdkit background threads
https://github.com/libguestfs/nbdkit/blob/ecef5b16359fb5af7e7abf4fd2fb3ad5438b16be/TODO#L76 Already existing filters (readahead, cache) could be improved if filters could open a background work thread or threads which connect independently to the plugin. A proposed new filter (scan) cannot really be written at all without this capability. First of all the reason this can't be done today is

[nbdkit PATCH 0/2] Avoid oddities with files unaligned to granularity
When using a filter that rounds up to alignment boundaries, the tail bytes of the plugin are difficult to access correctly. Rather than duplicating lots of code already in the truncate filter, it's easier to just make the other filters default to rounding down and add doc links on how to round up instead. [nbdkit PATCH v3 00/15] Add FUA support to nbdkit
After more than a month since v2 [1], I've finally got my FUA support series polished. This is all of my outstanding patches, even though some of them were originally posted in separate threads from the original FUA post [2], [3] [1] https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-January/msg00113.html [2] https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-January/msg00219.html [3]

[nbdkit PATCH 0/2] RFC: tweak error handling, add log filter
Here's what I'm currently playing with; I'm not ready to commit anything until I rebase my FUA work on top of this, as I only want to break filter ABI once between releases. [PATCH nbdkit] filters: Add caching filter.
This adds a cache filter, which works like the COW filter in reverse. For realistic use it needs a bit more work, especially to add limits on the size of the cache, a more sensible cache replacement policy, and perhaps some kind of background worker to write dirty blocks out. Rich.
