[PATCH libnbd] configure: Ban use of Variable Length Arrays (VLAs).
Since we don't know much about the calling environment, which might have a limited stack, might be taking input from untrusted sources, or we might not have other stack protections enabled, it's best to be cautious about using unbounded stack allocations. We're not in fact using them in libnbd, but this change prevents them from being added in future. --- configure.ac | 2 +- 1 file

[PATCH nbdkit] Ban use of stack Variable Length Arrays (VLAs).
I'm not someone who thinks VLAs are automatically bad and unlike Linux kernel code they can sometimes be used safely in userspace. However for an internet exposed server there is an argument that they might cause some kind of exploitable situation especially if the code is compiled without other stack hardening features. Also in highly multithreaded code with limited stack sizes (as nbdkit

[nbdkit PATCH v2] tests: Skip guestfs code on CentOS 6
CentOS 6 has libguestfs-devel 1.20.11, which predates the support in guestfs_add_drive_opts() for requesting an nbd drive instead of a local file (annoyingly, guestfs documentation merely states the function was available since 0.3, without saying which later releases added new options); causing a compilation failure during 'make check'. Maybe the guestfs plugin should still be built,

[nbdkit PATCH 2/1] RFC: tests: Run tests that don't require libguestfs
A bit of refactoring to the HAVE_LIBGUESTFS conditional, coupled with the addition of a LIBGUESTFS_TESTS intermediate list, allows us to run a few more tests on CentOS 6 (adding some tests of command-line behavior and filters that was previously completely skipped). For the two tests that we can't run, using check_PROGRAMS still causes those programs to try to compile (which leads to compile

[libnbd PATCH] maint: Use $(NULL) for all Makefile.am macro lists
This borrows from a trick in libvirt - by defining $(NULL) to expand to an empty string, we can more consistently write multi-line macros where all useful lines terminate with \, making it easier to add/remove lines without worrying about whether \ needs to be touched up on neighboring lines. --- Looks big, but is fairly mechanical. I'm also doing a similar patch for nbdkit, where it would

[PATCH libnbd 0/5] interop: Check that LIBNBD_TLS_ALLOW works against nbdkit.
I was a little surprised to find that LIBNBD_TLS_ALLOW worked out of the box, so I had to examine the logs whereupon I saw the magic message ... libnbd: debug: nbd1: nbd_connect_command: server refused TLS (policy), continuing with unencrypted connection I don't believe this path has ever been tested before. It's possible the tests could be improved if they actually checked for this

[PATCH libnbd 5/5] interop: Add tests of nbdkit + LIBNBD_TLS_ALLOW.
Test both the TLS enabled and fallback paths. nbd-server doesn't appear to support TLS at all, and qemu-nbd is known not to allow fallback to unencrypted, and therefore it only makes sense to test nbdkit at the moment. --- .gitignore | 4 ++++ TODO | 3 --- interop/Makefile.am | 54 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ interop/interop.c | 30

[libnbd PATCH] api: Add LIBNBD_SHUTDOWN_IMMEDIATE flag
As mentioned in commits 176fc4ea and 609c25f0, our original plan in adding a flags argument to nbd_shutdown was to let us specify different behaviors at the libnbd level, rather than NBD protocol flags (for that, the user has nbd_aio_disconnect). But when we later parameterized OFlags to accept various bitmasks (commit f891340b), we failed to mark nbd_shutdown as using a different bitmask than

[PATCH nbdkit] valgrind: Don't call dlclose when running under valgrind.
When valgrinding plugins, the following sequence can happen: plugin_free -> dlclose -> unloads the plugin and symbol table exit -> valgrind prints failures (the same applies to filters). When valgrind is printing the failures, it looks up the addresses in the symbol table, but that has been unloaded already so all you see are "???", resulting in useless

[PATCH nbdkit 0/9] Create libnbdkit.so
This creates libnbdkit.so as discussed in the following thread: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-March/thread.html#00203 test-delay-shutdown.sh fails for unclear reasons. This series starts by reverting "tests: Don't strand hung nbdkit processes" which is because several other tests fail randomly unless I revert this patch. I didn't investigate this yet so it

[PATCH libnbd 2/2] api: Implement local command with systemd socket activation.
This adds new APIs for running a local NBD server and connecting to it using systemd socket activation (instead of stdin/stdout). This includes interop tests against nbdkit and qemu-nbd which I believe are the only NBD servers supporting socket activation. (If we find others then we can add more interop tests in future.) The upstream spec for systemd socket activation is here:

[nbdkit PATCH 0/4] Start using cleanup macros in filters/plugins
There's more that can be done (in particular, use of CLEANUP_FREE), but this is enough to at least see if I'm on the right track. I couldn't figure out an obvious difference between common/include and common/utils, but it looks like the former is for things that are inlineable via .h only, while the latter is when you need to link in a convenience library, so this landed in the

[PATCH nbdkit 3/3] tests: fix generation of PKI test data
Move the generation of PKI test data outside of the HAVE_LIBGUESTFS, otherwise they will not be generated when the tests using libguestfs are not enabled.
