[PATCH] appliance: Pass root=UUID=... to supermin.
By passing root=UUID=... to supermin, we make the appliance boot process less sensitive to the non-deterministic process of scanning SCSI disks (of which much more to come). This patch should be tested alongside the supermin patch posted here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2017-April/msg00174.html which in turn requires this supermin patch series:

Error while loading shared libraries: libsbz.so
Hi, I have a KVM host running ubuntu 18.04 with libguestfs-tools version 1.36.13-1ubuntu3.3 installed from the Ubuntu's repo and when I try to use virt-cat for example on a VM it fails with: libguestfs: error: appliance closed the connection unexpectedly. > libguestfs: error: guestfs_launch failed. [PATCH v2 0/4] daemon: Translate device names if Linux device is unstable (RHBZ#1804207).
v1 was here: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2020-February/msg00220.html This patch series is a little bit better. It's still a bit of a hack. The _real_ fix for this is outlined in the TODO file (see patch 1) but that requires a lot more work than we could do before 1.42 is released, unless we delay 1.42 for a lot longer. I'm hoping with this to have something which works

[PATCH 0/3] appliance: Pass "quiet" option to kernel when !verbose.
Using the quiet option (when not in verbose mode) improves boot speeds by rather a lot, by avoiding sending messages over the slow emulated UART. Rich.

Issue with libguestfs-test-tool on a guest hosted on VMWare ESXi
I am using a debian 9 guest, hosted on a ESXi platform with nested virtualisation enabled. On this debian 9 guest when I run libguesfs-test-tool, it fails with an error: "qemu-system-x86_64: /build/qemu-DqynNa/qemu-2.8+dfsg/target-i386/kvm.c:1805: kvm_put_msrs: Assertion `ret == cpu->kvm_msr_buf->nmsrs' failed." [PATCH 0/2] lib: appliance: qemu 2.9.0 supports TCG with -cpu host on x86 (RHBZ#1277744).
NB: This requires a qemu patch by Eduardo which is currently awaiting review: https://www.mail-archive.com/qemu-devel@nongnu.org/msg422959.html So not to be applied yet unless that qemu change goes upstream. Rich.

[PATCH 0/4] Use libvirt firmware autoselection
Starting with 5.2.0, libvirt has a way to select the firmware by specifying its type, provided configuration files for the firmware are shipped. Currently we start the appliance as UEFI if any of the firmware are found, so instead we can try to just set the firmware type iff: - the libvirt autoselection works - the 'efi' firmware is available The only behaviour change is that the default

[PATCH] launch: rework handling of --enable-valgrind-daemon
Instead of forcing valgrind to be run when --enable-valgrind-daemon is passed to configure, enable it only when the backend setting "valgrind_daemon" is set. This allows developers to keep building with --enable-valgrind-daemon, which unconditionally adds valgrind in the appliance but using only when requested. When --enable-valgrind-daemon is not passed (typical for release builds),

[PATCH] lib: Use a common function to validate strings.
As discussed in the thread on validating $TERM, it would be good to have a common function to do this. This is such a function. The main advantage is it includes unit tests which the previous functions did not. Rich.
