File permissions
Hello,
I need to know if there is something I am missing about file permission as I
believe I am seeing some strange stuff on my system. I have a directory as
follows:
drwxrwxrwx 7 root root 4096 Mar 10 13:35 temp
In this directory I have a file:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 137 Oct 30 02:16 208-109-248-33test
As a normal user should I be able to rename this file? I believe that only

How does a linux DHCP machine inform DNS of its name and obtained address
I am using a number of DHCP devices on a network. Working fine with
CentOS 5 x86_64.
My question is now how do I tell the DNS (after I get my DHCP address)
about my devices
name and IP address so that others can find me by my machine name?
I thought that was an automatic thing - but it appears not.
Thanks,
Jerry

Basic Permissions Questions
Hi List :)
So, I have a folder1, its owner is user1 who has r+w on the folder.
User2 is the group owner who only has read access (when I say user2, I
mean the group called user2, because when you make a new user the OS
can make them their own group). You can see these permissions below:
[user2 at host test]$ ls -l
drw-r----- 3 user1 user2 28 Nov 2 16:17 folder1

Recommendation for a Linux alternative to Centos - ATH9K disaster
I persuaded a reluctant friend to buy a new computer. I enthusiastically
extolled the joys and benefits of Centos and promised to install it on
his new machine - dual booting with Micro$oft Windoze 7.
His super-duper new laptop arrived. Acer, AMD 4 core, fast etc. but not
as nice looking as my impressive HP DV5. The wireless refused to
connect.
After 8 hours on Saturday I could sometimes see

Ideas for stopping ssh brute force attacks
just wanted to get some feedback from the community. Over the last few
days I have noticed my web server and email box have attempted to ssh'd to
using weird names like admin,appuser,nobody,etc.... None of these are
valid users. I know that I can block sshd all together with iptables but
that will not work for us. I did a little research on google and found
programs like sshguard and

Linux Bridge + QoS Shaper HOWTO available
I''ve created a pretty complete HOWTO on creating a Linux Bridge (using
Fedora) to shape LAN <--> WAN traffic. It includes installation
instructions, a script to configure the bridge (which you install as a
service), and 2 scripts to configure the network interfaces using traffic
control.

Time based calls charging and "reserved" numbers up to 999!
In United Kingdom, we have time based dialling pricing from most of
Telco's
based on time the call is placed! It is called PEAK (08.00- 18.00
Mon-Fri), OFF PEAK(18.00-08.00 Mon-Fri) and WEEKEND (all other times!
Could someone from any of other countries let me know if time based
charging exists in your country?
Also, what numbers (up to 999) are commonly used for emergency, police

COnfiguring an * system for a non-profit organization
Hi,
Maybe someone has seen this before...
I've installed a new T100P, but it doesn't seem to work. I've attached
the T100P to an Adtran 750 using a crossover cable. The Adtran shows a
red alarm on the T1 interface. The Adtran has been set to factory
defaults with FXS cards in 1-3 and an FXO card in 5.
The T100P shows no signs of life--the leds are not lit. Should I be

Open Source NAS/NFS solution
Hi
Has anyone got any ideas on a nfs/nas appliance that i can install on
x86 hardware with a few JBOD shelves attached to it. I would like an
appliance like install and based on CentOS would be great. I really like
the look of www.openfiler.com but it seems to be only in RC release
stage so i don't think the 'boss' would like that idea.
thanks

How Is Administrator Treated?
I have a couple of Samba 2.2 servers, in different locations, configured as
NT Domain Controllers, but I'm experiencing some problems with logging on
to the domains as Administrator in order to perform some administration
tasks, such as configuring antivirus software on workstations. I won't go
into the details here; I think the basic problem is my lack of
understanding of how the

Reading microsoft .xls format and openoffice OpenDocument files
1. I have used gdata::read.xls() with much happiness. But every now
and then it breaks. I have not, as yet, been able to construct a
mental model about the class of .xls files for which it works. Does
someone have a simple rule for predicting the circumstances under
which it will work?
2. Just like there is a read.xls(), it'd be great if we have a
read.ods() which directly

Hello,
I cannot figure out how to shade between two lines in a plot. For
example, if I am trying to plot a confidence envelope and I would like to
shade the interior of the envelope grey. Is this possible in R?
Thanks in advance.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Hello everyone,
I''m quite a newbie with Xen and I''m currently having an issue.
I run Xen 4 on Debian Squeeze x64 and I''m trying to build an OpenFiler DomU from the Xen domU filesystem tarbal they provide (See http://www.openfiler.com/community/download/).
I downloaded the tarball and run ''tar xzpvf /root/soft/openfiler-2.3-x86_64.tar.gz'' to extract
