[PATCH 00/13] x86/paravirt: Make pv ops code generation more closely match reality
This changes the pv ops code generation to more closely match reality. For example, instead of: callq *0xffffffff81e3a400 (pv_irq_ops.save_fl) vmlinux will now show: pushfq pop %rax nop nop nop nop nop which is what the runtime version of the code will show in most cases. This idea was suggested by Andy Lutomirski. The benefits are: - For the most common runtime cases

[PATCH 0/15] adjust pvops to accomodate its x86_64 variant
Hi folks, With this series, the bulk of the work of pvops64 is done. Here, I integrate most of the paravirt.c and paravirt.h files, making them applicable to both architectures. CONFIG_PARAVIRT is _not_ present yet. Basically, this code is missing page table integration (patches currently being worked on by Jeremy). Enjoy

[PATCH 2/2] x86, paravirt: Fix bool return type for PVOP_CALL
Commit 3cded4179481 ("x86/paravirt: Optimize native pv_lock_ops.vcpu_is_preempted()") introduced a paravirt op with bool return type [*] It turns out that the PVOP_CALL*() macros miscompile when rettype is bool. Code that looked like: 83 ef 01 sub $0x1,%edi ff 15 32 a0 d8 00 callq *0xd8a032(%rip) # ffffffff81e28120 <pv_lock_ops+0x20> 84 c0

[PATCH 07/13] x86/paravirt: Simplify ____PVOP_CALL()
Remove the inline asm duplication in ____PVOP_CALL(). Also add 'IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_X86_32)' to the return variable logic, making the code clearer and rendering the comment unnecessary. [PATCH] paravirt_ops: Clean up paravirt patchable wrappers
Replace all the open-coded macros for generating calls with a pair of more general macros (__PVOP_CALL/VCALL), and redefine all the PVOP_V?CALL[0-4] in terms of them. [ Andrew, Andi: this should slot in immediately after "Document asm-i386/paravirt.h" (paravirt_ops-document-asm-i386-paravirth.patch) ] Signed-off-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy@xensource.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar

[patch 00/17] paravirt_ops updates
Hi Andi, This series of patches updates paravirt_ops in various ways. Some of the changes are plain cleanups and improvements, and some add some interfaces necessary for Xen. The brief overview: add-MAINTAINERS.patch - obvious remove-CONFIG_DEBUG_PARAVIRT.patch - no longer needed paravirt-nop.patch - mark nop operations consistently paravirt-pte-accessors.patch - operations to pack/unpack

[PATCH 02/13] x86/paravirt: Fix output constraint macro names
Some of the paravirt '*_CLOBBERS' macros refer to output constraints instead of clobbers, which makes the code extra confusing. Rename the output constraint related macros to '*_OUTPUTS'. [patch 00/20] paravirt_ops updates
Hi Andi, Here's a repost of the paravirt_ops update series I posted the other day. Since then, I found a few potential bugs with patching clobbering, cleaned up and documented paravirt.h and the patching machinery. Overview: add-MAINTAINERS.patch obvious remove-CONFIG_DEBUG_PARAVIRT.patch No longer meaningful or needed. paravirt-nop.patch Clean up nop paravirt_ops functions, mainly to

[PATCH 11/13] x86/paravirt: Add paravirt alternatives infrastructure
With CONFIG_PARAVIRT, the kernel .text is littered with a bunch of calls to pv_irq_ops function pointers, like: callq *0xffffffff81e3a400 (pv_irq_ops.save_fl) In non-Xen paravirt environments -- including native, KVM, Hyper-V, and VMware -- the above code gets patched by native_patch() to look like this instead: pushfq pop %rax nopl 0x0(%rax,%rax,1) So in most scenarios,

[PATCH 0/4] make virt_spin_lock() a pvops function
With virt_spin_lock() being a pvops function the bare metal case can be optimized by patching the call away completely. In case a kernel running as a guest it can decide whether to use paravitualized spinlocks, the current fallback to the unfair test-and-set scheme, or to mimic the bare metal behavior. Juergen Gross (4): paravirt: add generic _paravirt_false() function paravirt: switch

[PATCH v3 00/12] x86, kbuild: revert macrofying inline assembly code
This series reverts the in-kernel workarounds for inlining issues. The commit description of 77b0bf55bc67 mentioned "We also hope that GCC will eventually get fixed,..." Now, GCC provides a solution. https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Extended-Asm.html explains the new "asm inline" syntax. The performance issue will be eventually solved.
