Last call: Asterisk BoF in Boston, Tuesday 23rd
Hello -
The final schedule for the Asterisk birds-of-a-feather meeting (as
an adjunct to the VON conference) in Boston looks like this:
Tuesday, September 23rd at 8:15 at VinnyT's of Boston near the Hynes
Convention Center.
We'll try to get a corner booth in the "downstairs room", and look
for the guy wearing the blue button-down shirt with VON logos on the
breast pocket

Bonferroni with unequal sample sizes
Hello-
I have run an ANOVA on 4 treatments with unequal sample sizes (n=9,7,10 and 10). I want to determine where my sig. differences are between treatments using a Bonferroni test, and have run the code:
pairwise.t.test(Wk16, Treatment, p.adf="bonf")
I receive an error message stating that my arguments are of unequal length:
Error in tapply(x, g, mean, na.rm = TRUE) :

read.xport
I am trying to import data from a SAS XPORT file that contains 24 SAS files.
When I use the "read.xport" procedure only about 16 data frames (components)
are created. Any suggestions?

readBin() arg check has unnecessary overhead (patch included)
Dear all,
The version of readBin() in R-devel includes a use of match(), through
`%in%`, which can affect its performance significantly. By using
primitives instead of the rather expensive call to match(), I reduce
the time spent inside readBin() by more than 30% in some of my code
(part of the tractor.base package). A simple patch that does this is
given below. This passes "make

R programming question
Dear All.,
I've created R-code for which a user will be asked to choose between 2
analyses. I've written one function for each type of analysis. Within
each function, the users is prompted to enter information. An example
is:
cat("Enter value for lower Linf :\n")
L1<-scan(n=1)
cat("Enter value for upper Linf :\n")
L2<-scan(n=1)

R --interactive and readline() creates infinite loop
Dear all,
I have asked before, in R-help [1], about a way to create an
interactive session in which commands are taken from a file or
standard input - like R CMD BATCH but additionally allowing user input
- but there was no response to that question, and the workarounds that
I have found (using "expect", creating a temporary .Rprofile) are ugly
and problematic.

General "nil" reference class object
Dear John and others,
I've been wondering about whether there's any way to indicate a "nil"
reference class object, which will represent "no value", and be tested
for, but not fail the internal type checking. NULL is the obvious
choice (or seems so to me), but can only be used if an explicit class
union is created:

Help with downloading clim.pact
I am wondering if anyone might know why the package clim.pact won't
install properly. I have tried many URL sites and the same thing
happens. I get the error message below. I also tried downloading the
ZIP from the CRAN site and extracting the file myself, but an error
message (something like, "not an archive file") appears. I operate
through Windows.
Thanks.
Gary Nelson.

Problem with & in domain name.
Hi,
I'm using Samba 2.2.4 and I'm trying to connect via domain level security,
but I'm having problems which I think are due to the fact that the NT
domain contains an ampersand. (I know this is bad, but I inherited it...)
I can add the samba server to the domain with the command:
smbpasswd -j MFP\&MFA -r NTSERVER -Uadministrator

SimCity 4 + RH easily crashes with addons and heavy city.
Hello.
First, thank you a lot for Wine. It is really a fabulous project and ex windows users like me really say you thanks a lot each time we use Wine.
Second, I have installed SimCity 4 (with the help of PlayOnLinux) and its expansion pack Rush Hour. Many things worked quite well. I would say this game almost works well. But here are my issues :

lqmm package 1.02
Dear R users
lqmm version 1.02 is now on CRAN. lqmm provides commands for estimation of linear quantile regression models with random effects. Commands for independent and count data are also available. A few bugs have been fixed since lqmm 1.0.
Updates of this package are (usually) made available on https://r-forge.r-project.org/R/?group_id=1396 prior to submission to CRAN.

gtools(read.xls) error in perl installation?
My installation is R version 2.4.0 on Mac OS X version 10.4.8 (the
latest release in both cases). I've recently had to restore my hard
drive after a crash, and fear that this may have screwed up my Perl
installation slightly.
Whenever I run the read.xls function from library(gtools) I get the
following errors:
