Problem searching with special characters
I''m using Ferret on a Swedish website and I get some unexpected
behaviour on searches containing the swedish charchters ???.
An exampel, if I index a string "Varf?r fungerar det inte" ("Why doesnt
it work" in swedish) and search for "f?r" I''ll get one (1) match. The
expected behaviour would be no matches since ''f?r'' is part of

Large number of prefixes in a route to a trunk
We're beginning to test MultiTech's CallFinder CDMA Units, one for Sprint
PCS and one for Alltel. They sell both. Our intent is to use them as a

I want to compose a new table (a presence/absence matrix of species in
regions) by matches between two data frames.
The first data frame has the species as header and the habitats in

how to combine presence only data sets to one presence/absence table
Problem: I have a Set of samples each with a list of observed species
(presence only).
Data is stored in a excel spreadsheet and the columns (spl) have

How to substitute special characters within a data frame?
Hello all,
I have a data frame in R, imported from an excel file in Swedish. The original file contains several columns that have special characters, such as \¨{a}, \¨{o}, and so on. After import such special characters are represented in the data frame by "\\345", "\\366" etc (don't ask me why). For example, a word "Hårkan" becomes ''H\\345rkan".

R-WinEdt unexcpected Asian characters
Dear list!
I have encountered an odd problem with R-WinEdt.
The program is mostly running fine and I had no problems with the installation.
But several times a day I'm typing in R-WinEdt there appears a menu with
Chinese characters where the curser is and I'm not able to type normally. I

R 1.9.0, special characters in variable names.
Hello all,
I upgraded from R 1.8.1 to 1.9.0 (Windows XP), and spotted an odd thing.
The last three letters in the Swedish alphabet are ??, ?? and ??. (In case they don't show correctly: they are a with a ring, a with two dots, and o with two dots (HTML: å ä ö).
When I use these as variable names in a data.frame, odd things happen:

Ext3 destroying ownerships and permissions
Hi!
A few weeks ago we upgraded 9 large webservers from ext2 to ext3. Since then we've seen very strange behavior on several of the machines. Permissions of files are repeatedly changed at random occasions. Several times, ownership of files have been totally mangled. Several users have logged in to discover that all their files suddenly are owned by another user! At two of these occasions
