I think it is weird - with everything else being connected to LANs like
fridges etc . . why not UPSs?

Why are LAN ports not standard on UPSs these days?
Hi Phil,
I don't have an answer to your question about the lack of LAN ports, but
can offer my experience with NUT for a home server environment. I've
tended to prefer the Tripp-Lite UPS systems, mainly because I originally
felt they did a good job of power filtering. I use a NUT master running on
a Raspberry Pi 3 which is easy to maintain and gets current updates via its
Debian roots.

Thanks for the response . .

Rsyncing without RSH or SSH ?
People,
This doesn't seem possible - would it be possible to hack a version of
rsync to do it?
As an exercise, I want to create a VM image (or at least backup of all
the files with rsync) from a SCSI drive in an old Red Hat (NOT
Enterprise) v5.2 Linux 486 machine (circa 1999 that does have rsync on
it but it has protocol problems talking my server). The 486 has:

A Neural Network question
People,
I thought I needed to have some familiarity with NNs for some of my
current (non-profit, brain-related) projects so I started looking at
various programming environments including R and I got this working:
http://gekkoquant.com/2012/05/26/neural-networks-with-r-simple-example
however I needed pictures to help understand what was going on and then
I found this:

Copying TBs -> error -> work around
People,
When I did:
rsync -av /home/ /mntb5/ # about 4TB
I got errors like:
'rsync [sender] expand file_list pointer array to xxx bytes, "did
move"'
with rsync hanging - after breakout on /home for writing I then get:
"Read-only file system"
So after unmounting and remounting /home I did:
cd /home
find /home/ -type d | sort >

linux rsync <-> SSHDroid has started becoming unreliable after an upgrade of Fedora 28 to 29
People,
For some years I have been using rsync quite happily to send / retrieve
files to / from SSHDroid Pro but recently I have started having a
problem when transferring large numbers of file - I am pretty sure it
started after upgrading from Fedora x86_64 28 to 29 - but I am not 100%
sure. Below is the tail end of the output of:
rsync -avvv root at 192.168.1.100:/storage . >

NUT - General Concept Question
I've been looking over the documentation and several installation guides for NUT, and I'm starting to get a little bit of a feel for what it is. But I'm still not clear whether what I'd *like* to accomplish is actually practical using NUT. Perhaps someone here can tell me if they've done something similar, or if I'm way off base.
I would like to set up a Linux host as a

FE700VA over USB? controlling UPSes over network?
Lately I replaced my 10+-year-old server with a nano-ITX-type one
that has USB but not old serial ports. I connected my FE700VA to
DB25-to-9-to-USB cables, but haven't been able to set it up. Apparently
my DB9-to-USB cable (Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port) has
issues needing old software (setserial?) and some new software
(fconfigure) being changed. Has anyone managed

Synology NAS is shutting down Ubuntu servers after very brief power outage (fwd)
Thanks Larry, no problem. I appreciate the input. Whenever you get a chance I’d really like to compare notes with someone who has NUT and a Synology to see why the heck mine doesn’t work! ;). I’m also using my Pi as the master like you. Thanks.

Synology NAS is shutting down Ubuntu servers after very brief power outage (fwd)
So I finally got a test in after I changed my RPi to the master and everything else (including my Synology) to slaves. Before I did that though, I timed the shutdown of my Synology since it is the slowest slave to shutdown. It took 40 seconds to shutdown, so I changed HOSTSYNC in upsmon.conf on the master (“Proton”) to 60. I then did a test ("sudo upsmon -c fsd”). The slaves shutdown, then

People,
I didn''t get an answer to this before so I am trying again:
I could change an existing "policy" table to "policies" with no drama
but the are a number of related tables ie:
p_2quot
p_addr
p_cc
p_cs
p_direct
p_div

New improved version of nut-report script
Roger, I get 4.3.8(1)-release
There was good reason, BTW, for the script to NOT fine the journal
script on my machine. I had not downloaded it yet.

Synology NAS is shutting down Ubuntu servers after very brief power outage (fwd)
Larry,
I have not edited a single file, including anything to do with NUT, on the Synology via ssh.... ever. How is yours configured in the UI? Do you have it set to go into safe mode after a certain number minutes?
Earlier, I was just copying and pasting the contents of some files to Roger but did not change anything.

Another New User Question - Notify Script Not Running
Roger,
Thanks for the idea to add additional items to the notifyflag. That
proved the monitor was indeed working as expected and led me to find
that my script had myriad issues when run under the nut user. All
remedied now.
As I progress, I may well end up migrating to the upssched. As a newbie
I was simply following the documented "simple" way described here

Scaffolding - disabling Create, Edit, Destroy for some user logins?
People,
I am using:
before_filter :login_required
in my Controllers and this works fine. For some tables I am happy to
use the output of eg:
ruby script/generate scaffold Author
but is there some way that I can disable Create, Edit, Destroy for some
user logins in the corresponding view?
Thanks,
Phil.

SU2200RTXLCD2U and protocol 4006
Hello
I asked Tripplite the serial protocol implemented in the UPS model
SU2200RTXLCD2U.
The protocol is the 4006, which is not supported by the NUT.
I connected my UPS unit to a serial terminal client (both from a Windows
machine and a Linux machine), set the communication parameters to those
indicated in the protocol spec, and tried to open the communication,
unfortunately with no success.

Pluralization of non-noun names
People,
I have an insurance company client and for the last eleven years I have
wanted to completely redevelop their system from scratch. However, the
boss has never been interested in hiring a team to develop the new
system (partly because of the cost and partly because of some famous and
expensive development failures in the industry) and has always insisted
on incremental development of the
