unexpected shutdown, had to reinstall xorg.server
Greetings all; I expect that I may not have the shutdown properly configured, but my site was subjected to some bad weather related intermittent power losses a week+ back, and I have an automatic standby plant, a 20kw, that usuall fires up and has the lights back on in 7 or 8 seconds. So while the power folks were reclosing substation breakers to see where the next tree limb was shorting

Stale imap processes
Anyone have any theories or experiences as to why for a certain user, some of his imap processes hang, and stay around for days and days? He just reported that his Thunderbird was timing out when trying to open folders, I looked on the server, and he had 3 old imap processes from 1 week+ ago. I killed those and his performance immediately improved. He checks mail with Thunderbird > 1.5

Forwarding Remote Ports.
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I was setting up sshd on a netbsd box to allow cygwin users to auto-ssh in, and be rsync'ed. I wanted to secure the install such that a compromised or stolen cygwin client could not be used to attack the sshd server. Setting shell to /usr/bin/false and using -N client side were helpful. I disabled portforwarding for the client sshkey, and

lme: how to compare random effects in two subsets of data
Dear R-gurus, I have an interpretation problem regarding lme models. I am currently working on dog locomotion, particularly on some variation factors. I try to figure out which limb out of 2 generated more dispersed data. I record a value called Peak, around 20 times for each limb with a record. I repeat the records during a single day, and on several days. I tried to build two models, one

[LLVMdev] Optimizing math code
Hello LLVM-dev, I’m writing some crypto math code in C, and trying to make it as simple and portable as possible, so that there won’t be any unforeseen platform bugs. Ideally, I’d like the compiler to as much work as possible for me, and I’m wondering if you know how to make clang (or gcc, for that matter) do some of this. So I have a couple of questions. If this is the wrong list to ask for

Member server won't authenticate against Samba BDC
For the last few years, we have had a NT4 PDC (without a BDC). This week I undertook the process of builing a Samba BDC running Debian linux. This new BDC is running samba version 3.0.7. After setting up the box, I copied all of the user, group, and machine accounts over to the new bdc, using "net rpc vampire". The BDC is up and running and I see everybody authenticating against it.

Crickets. Yes, crickets.
How many times have you been on a conference call and some other participant puts their line on hold, leading to their hold music making conversation impossible for the rest of the group? This scenario happens to me all the time and it drives me NUTS. I prefer no hold music, because I am often on conference calls, and I also usually hate listening to music on the phone when I usually

R-2.0.1 reinstall non-CRAN pkg
I am trying to upgrade to R-2.0.1 from R-1.9 on a Mac running OS X 10.3. I have some simple packages I wrote myself that have to be reinstalled to be recognized as valid packages. I have been using them for a while on earlier versions of R, so didn't expect to have any problems. I am probably going about this the wrong way? I simply used R CMD build mypkgdir and then R CMD install
