similar to: Desktop effects on KDE?

Hello all I've got a Matshita dvd-ram uj-830sx that is performing very bad on my freshly installed CentOS 5. I'm using k3b and get a steady 1.2x which is way too slow. I think it is supposed to do ~8x and the discs are 16x. Any suggestions? (hdparm -c 1 -d 1 /dev/hdc turned on 32-bit IO but only helped slightly) Johnny Ljunggren

Hi All, I've got a really dumb question. I seem to have lost my Trash Can on my KDE desktop and try and as I might I can't get it back. Anyone have any idea how I can create this again or get it back? What's the best way to do this? Remove the yum group gnome (does this set default init to 3?), install the yum group KDE and then set default init to 5 again (as I assume installing KDE not during the setup will not automatically set the system to start the gui?). Is there a "built in" application for X/gnome/KDE that given a text string scroll it across the desktop? a command line program that did this would be exactly what I'm looking for. Is there anything like this? THanks, Jerry

I have a simple automount configuration problem. I've done two similar, clean, Custom installations of CentOS 5.0, on two similar, but not identical boxes. On my box, automount is working perfectly. On my daughter's box, it's not working. If I put the FC6 DVD into the drive in my box, I can see the contents of the DVD, without any problem. If I cat /etc/mtab in my box, I see this line:

I learned from Anne that if I boot to level 5, after I enter the username, can select Gnome or KDE. I note that the default is always Gnome. How can I make the default KDE? How can I get KDE with startx after booting to level 3? Thanks, Mike.

Hi, I have already installed 4.2 on my laptop, I only chose GNOME at install time. I now need to use up2date to install kde (I wish to install twinkle softphone). What is the correct way to do that.
