OpenSSH portability & buildsystem fixes
Hi,
I recently ported OpenSSH to my hobbyist operating system. The portable
release is very straightforward to work with, but it had a few minor
issues where it assumes the existence of things that might not be on a
POSIX 2008 system. This are the list of issues I encountered that I
believe makes sense to upstream.

Gcc-4.9.0 trunk revision 208516 cannot compile openssh package with -flto
Hello,
Could I please ask you for help?
I opened a case in GCC Bugzilla and got reply that -fpie have to be
used to get it compiled.
Now it fails for me with:
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -o ssh ssh.o readconf.o clientloop.o sshtty.o
sshconnect.o sshconnect1.o sshconnect2.o mux.o roaming_common.o
roaming_client.o -L. -Lopenbsd-compat/ -flto=4 -fuse-linker-plugin
-Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-O2 -Wl,-flto -O2

vanilla build of 7.7p1 release on linux/4.17 fails with gcc8 @ "/usr/bin/ld: unrecognized option '-Wl,-z,retpolineplt'"
One difference I notice is that in your failing example you are
invoking /usr/bin/ld directly to link:
/usr/bin/ld -o ssh ssh.o readconf.o clientloop.o
sshtty.o sshconnect.o sshconnect2.o mux.o -L. -Lopenbsd-compat/
-Wl,-z,retpolineplt -Wl,-z,relro -Wl,-z,now -Wl,-z,noexecstack
-fstack-protector-strong -pie -lssh -lopenbsd-compat -lutil -lz
-lcrypt -lresolv
whereas my example is

additional compiler hardening flags
Hi all.
Any reason not to turn these on if the system supports them? They're
cheap but not free (a bit under 1% slower to run the complete regress
suite in a completely unscientific test).
They're based on info from these places:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ToolChain/CompilerFlags
http://wiki.debian.org/Hardening
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/hardened/gnu-stack.xml
and I've attempted to

Using -lssh as shared library
Hello! This is my first post to this list... ;)
I'm not shure if someone will be interested in this topic.
For me, it has interest, as long as I maintain 100+ unix
(linux) servers with dialup access and every package update
cost some significant time to download, so package size is
somewhat important here.
I looked to openssh and realized that package consists of
several programs, all uses

vanilla build of 7.7p1 release on linux/4.17 fails with gcc8 @ "/usr/bin/ld: unrecognized option '-Wl,-z,retpolineplt'"
Verifying a report I just got pinged about, building vanilla openssh 7.7p1 on linux configures ok, but fails build around 'retpoline'
I've started looking through recent reports; haven't _yet_ found anything similar.
While I continue, is any of the following familiar/expected? Either known bug/issue or env conflict?
The current env includes supposedly retpoline-ready GCC 8.1.1,

Little cleanup for -lz
Here is a first patch in a series of similar ones (I hope).
This patch is to make -lz used for only those programs that
*really* need zlib (namely, ssh and sshd for now). There
is no need to load libz.so for ssh-keygen, sftp and others.
Related question. It seems ssh's configure script pickups
-lnsl on linux -- what for? It is required on solaris, but
not on linux. But on solaris, one

KTH krb4 and OpenSSL conflict building OpenSSH 3.0.2p1
Hi,
I configured OpenSSH 3.0.2p1 with
./configure --disable-suid-ssh --with-pam --with-kerberos4=/usr/athena \
--with-afs=/usr/afsws --with-ipaddr-display \
--with-ssl-dir=/afs/bi/v/@sys/libraries/openssl/latest
My "latest" OpenSSL is 0.9.6a. KTH krb4 is 1.1.
When linking the binaries, the KTH krb4 libdes conflicts with the
OpenSSL libdes. It seems to be possible to get around
