managing users from smbpasswd rather than /etc/passwd
I have samba installed on a web server (behind a firewall). It's working
fine with all the WINS networking here (eg, password authentication from
the NT servers, etc).
I (we) want this web server - a linux redhat 5.x box currently running
samba-1.9.18p8 - to have as few actual unix login accounts as possible.
What I want/need to do is to allow LOTS of people in the faculty here

astcc with multiple access
I'm looking at astcc and it seems that setting up a script that will
allow multiple people to access a calling card simultaneously would be
fairly difficult. Before I endevour to develop this, has anyone already
done it/looked at this/can point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

portmap vulnerability?
Are there any known vulnerabilities in portmap (redhat''s
portmap-4.0-7b)? I''ve been receiving a lot of attempts to access the
portmap port on some linuxppc machines I administer by various
machines which clearly have no business with mine, and I wonder if
this is an attempt to break in to my machines.
I''ve searched some archives, but I haven''t yet found any

Ports in close state
I have a machine running redhat 6.2 and samba 2.0.6 that does a persistent mount to my Windows 2000 machine for the purposes of serving files via FTP.
The samba connection occasionally times out it seems, I get the message
smb_request: result -32, setting invalid
smb_retry: new pid=20679, generation=12
and it generates a new connection
I've got SO_KEEPALIVE active in the socket options in my

using DB2 with Rails 3
I have developed a rails 3 app and for various reasons I have been
compelled to try using DB2 as the underlying database system. Does
anyone have much experience of using DB2 with rails 3? Any good pointers
on resources? I have just been using postgres to date

Start and stop the samba server
Is there a good way to stop and restart the samba server...
for example to have it re read the smb.conf, without rebooting the
actual pc?
if I should kill a process should I kill them all ??? if so is there an
efficent way to do this?
thanks in advance

Forward only specific identities
Hi OpenSSH peeps!
I have looked around a few man pages and the usual sources of
information but I can't seem to find a way to only forward specific
identities to some hosts. What I would really like to have is a way to
only forward the identity that gave me a successful auth:
% ls ~/.ssh | grep .pub
id_ecdsa.pub
id_ed25519.pub
id_rsa.pub
% cat .ssh/config

Specification of identity for ssh client to use
Is there any way to tell the openssh client exactly which identity to
use for an outgoing commection? I know about "-i identityfile", but
it doesn't do what I want. I want to precisely specify the identity
to use, not just add an identity to a list of things to try. Whatever
mechanism is used should work both for local files and for identities
managed by ssh-agent.

Transcender test software
Hey all. Just tried installing Transcender testing software. As the AppDB suggests, it is garbage. The setup works fine but, no action after that. Does anyone have any suggestion on where i may start to try and get this running under wine?

utorremt systray
Hi
I have found that utorrent doesn't display its systray icon unless
I switch from dual screen to
single screen. When I login to twinview the systray icon is missing
but if I use nvidia-settings
I can switch to a single screen. and back and have a systray icon.
However if I restart utorrent
it will be as before and no systray icon. Should I file a bug report

Games: Grand Theft Auto 2 / DirectX 6.1 support?
Hi all,
I've checked the archives and can't find anything regarding the above so
here goes:
Has anyone had any luck getting GTA2 or other games that require DirectX
6.1 support working under Wine so far? I used to keep a Win95 partition
on my machine specifically for this game, but recently my second disk
died and I need the space for my Linux installation.
Any help appreciated.

Potential bug in update.formula when updating offsets
Hi all,
update.formula does not seem to correctly update (i.e. remove in my case)
offset terms.
Here is an example:
update(~x + offset(z), ~ . - offset(z))
> ~x + offset(z)
Also:
update(~x, ~ . - offset(z))
> ~x + offset(z)
In both cases, I would expect the result
> ~x
as - <term> should remove <term> from the formula as happens for instance
in:
update(~x + z, ~ . -
