The stack trace:
llvm::PMTopLevelManager::addImmutablePass(llvm::ImmutablePass*)
llvm::PMTopLevelManager::schedulePass(llvm::Pass*)
moduleToObjectFile(llvm::Module*,std::string&,llvm::LLVMContext&)
Sometimes it doesn't crash because TargetRegistry::lookupTarget() returns an error which says it doesn't support the current target

Sorry, that's a pure crash I think, assertions are not triggered.
Xcode doesn’t map those 2 functions to line numbers because they’re in precompiled libraries

Assuming you are talking about this line:
passmanager.add(tliwp);
I don't see anything obviously wrong.
Are you hitting an assertion or a pure crash? (if LLVM not built with assertions, please rebuild).
What does your debugger gives you as a stracktrace?

Without mapping to line numbers this is not very helpful: moduleToObjectFile

You may want to try adding this code (copy/pasted from llc.cpp):
// Initialize targets first, so that --version shows registered targets.
InitializeAllTargets();
InitializeAllTargetMCs();
InitializeAllAsmPrinters();
InitializeAllAsmParsers();

This code path is not likely to crash usually. Did you build LLVM yourself? Which version are you using and can you reduce the test case to be "minimal" so that someone can reproduce?
(for instance you don't need a module to create a pass manager)

Update:
Sorry my bad. I built llvm and tried it with debugging version.
It was an assertion (IR/LegacyPassManager.cpp:764) saying that it expects all immutable passes to be initialized.

The problems happens because PMTopLevelManager::findAnalysisPassInfo(AnalysisID AID) returns nullptr in PMTopLevelManager::addImmutablePass(ImmutablePass *P).
This because PassRegistry::getPassRegistry()->getPassInfo(AID) call in it returns nullptr as well.
Should I probably register the pass I want to add with PassRegistry::registerPass(const PassInfo &PI, bool ShouldFree) ?

Passes all need to be initialized before they are added into a pass manager.
Are you calling TargetLibraryInfoWrapperPass::initializePass anywhere?

llc -O2 vs. llc -O3 --> same debug-pass=Executions but output.obj differs?

I'm trying to minimize the processing time for llc -O3 by using a three
step compilation process of
1. llc input.bc -stopafter=targetlibinfo -o input.mir
2. llc -run-pass={....min passes...} input.mir -o opt.mir
3. llc -startafter=machine-opt-remark-emitter -filetype=obj opt.mir -o
final.obj
Examining the passes produced by llc for O1,O2,O3 I compared (with XXX =
{1,2,3}):

I'm a PhD student doing phase ordering as part of my PhD topic and I
would like to ask some questions about LLVM.
Executing the following command to see what passes does OPT execute when
targeting a SPARC V8 processor:

[LLVMdev] [PATCH] Catch NULL return value of ExecutionEngine::create()
ExecutionEngine::create() can return NULL with an empty error message
(admittedly, it did so because of global variable initialization
problems). The code currently lets NULL go through if ErrorMsg is empty,
and segfaults later.
When EE is NULL but ErrorMsg is empty, simply do not try to
print it and exit.

thanks for the detailed setup. Still, I haven't figured out the right
thing to do.
I would need only the native target since all generated code will
execute on the JIT execution machine (right now, the old JIT interface).
There is no need for other targets.
Maybe it would be good to ask specific questions:
How do I get the triple for the native target?

It's not picking the target information, although I tried with and
