Re: File System corruption tool
We have a script that adds corruption to ext2/3/4 filesystems and runs e2fsck on it. It definitely could be improved, but it still catches some occasional errors: http://git.whamcloud.com/?p=tools/e2fsprogs.git;a=commit;h=aee44c669bebe29bfdb8a1c86da443234f8bc257 It tries to format the filesystem with different features and options, then adds corruption from both random data and copying parts of

(To be precise,re-uses on 'debugfs' command's "dump_unused" feature) In summary, the tool will do the following - It will scan the linux machine ,for unused/deleted blocks and search for magic signatures. If it finds valid signature (both header and footer) It

Strange behaviour during file rename
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9535653/file-rename-on-ext3-appears-to-break-posix-spec I posted the above to stackoverflow - I am running a test does repeated file renames to a target file in one thread, and repeatedly reads that target file in another thread. This works fine except when there is a hard-link to the file being renamed to the target file. In this case the reading thread hits

Ext3 problems possibly plauging me
Hello. My box has been running flawlessly for months now, but in the last 2 days hasn't stayed up for more than 5 minutes. All this seemed to have started after I did a very very bad thing...... I ran the EXT2 to EXT3 conversion on my root filesystem. I used the "tune2fs -j /dev/sda1" to do the deed. After it completed the machine ran fine (the machine was up and serving when I

e2fsck on ext3 is 10x slower than ext2
Hi. I'm using Debian. Is this a Redhat-only list, or is it only hosted by RedHat? I recently changed my filing systems over to ext3, but deliberately left the forced boot check parameters alone so my system checks after 20 mounts. I notice that the fsck takes a good ten times longer than under ext2, to perform the cleanly unmounted check. (On the occasion where I did unmount dirtily, the

I am testing EXT3 as a filesystem for a server whose power supply is failure prone. In order to do the test, I have a lever that I can control from PC1 that can press the reset button on PC2. PC2's reset button is automatically pressed once every 120 seconds (the boot sequence on PC2 takes 80 seconds). While PC2 is booted, PC1 directs email and web requests at PC2, so that the PC2 disks are

filesystem corruption?
Got an older server here, running CentOS 6.6 (64-bit). Suddenly, at 0-dark-30 yesterday morning, we had failures to connect. After several tries to reboot and get working, I tried yum update, and that failed, complaining of an python krb5 error. With more investigation, I discovered that logins were failing as there was a problem with pam; this turned out to be it couldn't open
