[LLVMdev] [PATCH] basic reading reloc visitor for x86_64 ELF
For llvm-dwarfdump we need to handle relocations inside the debug info sections in order to successfully dump the dwarf info including strings. Nick sent out a partial patch that did this not too long ago and I've taken it and gone in a bit of a different direction, but kept the same basic architecture. In place of applying the relocations to the data we've read from disk I'm keeping

[DWARFv5] Reading the .debug_str_offsets section
Yep, Wolfgang picked up on the one thing I saw too. This is why I like having people review my stuff. I think it's a bit of a pity that str_offsets_base can point into the middle of a str_offsets contribution in some ways Actually I changed my mind after saying that in the review, and in this writeup I concluded that it cannot do that. str_offsets_base points to the element immediately

DWARF Generator
Re DW_FORM_string the savings is small but since it came up I thought I'd mention the idea. I agree it's not worth pursuing any further. An API to use that form explicitly (that isn't the normal debug-info generation API) to facilitate testing is fine. Regarding DWARF parsing speed where strings are concerned: DWARF 5 will ruin this because DW_FORM_strx is a ULEB; so, every DIE

[DWARFv5] Assembler syntax for new line-table features
TL;DR: If I'm trying to define new assembler directive syntax to support DWARF v5, it seems like a good idea for all the various assemblers out there in the world to support the same syntax. How would I go about negotiating that syntax with other assembler providers? Is GNU as the only really relevant one? Long version: DWARF v5 introduces a couple of new features in the .debug_line section

[LLVMdev] Generate .debug_info for asm files?
Dear LLVM devs, I've noticed that LLVM's assembler (and hence clang) doesn't generate debug data when assembling, even when run with "-g". Users can add their own CFI/line number data with assembler directives. But GDB ignores the line number data if you don't have a DIE in the .debug_info section which identifies the compilation unit. (I'm not an expert on GDB, but

[DWARFv5] Assembler syntax for new line-table features
To pass the MD5 checksum to the assembler, I added a new optional clause to the .file directive: md5 "checksum" where checksum is the 16-byte checksum in hex. It's quoted because the assembler doesn't have a way to parse a 16-byte integer. Also this is the same syntax Reid invented for the CodeView equivalent. To convey the root source filename, I allow the file number on the

[LLVMdev] [lldb-dev] How is variable info retrieved in debugging for executables generated by llvm backend?
All of this information is contained in the DWARF debug info that you must generate. Are you generating DWARF? If not, you will need to. If so, please attach an example program that contains DWARF and specify which function you are having trouble getting variable information for. DWARF Generator
I have recently been modifying the DWARF parser and have more patches planned and I want to be able to add unit tests that test the internal llvm DWARF APIs to ensure they continue to work and also validate the changes that I am making. There are not many DWARF unit tests other than very simple ones that test DWARF forms currently. I would like to expand this to include many more tests. I had
