[LLVMdev] ELFObjectFile::getSymbolFileOffset
While working on some other changes I came across a problem where ELFObjectFile::getSymbolFileOffset was returning a different value than I expected in the case where the symbol in question was a section. Modifying objects with MC
Hi,
I've been trying to write a tool that reads in an ELF file and modifies
one section within that ELF file based on the data contained within
another section. Using llvm-objdump as a template of how to read an
object file, I've been able to read the latter section that tells me
what to edit, but I haven't found a way to edit the former, as

A mutable interface to object files would be great to have but doesn't exist in any meaningful sense in LLVM today. David's hack and similar tricks are what's necessary right now.
I'd love to fix that as its a question that comes up not infrequently.

Hi Nick,
The object file already has the information that when its STT_FILE and the
symbol name is the name of the translation unit already.
I dont think the linker has to add a absolute symbol by figuring out the
translation unit.

I have rework the patch according to your suggestion. And I have
read binutil/objdump source code and found that it has a logic that if
there's no symtab, it will use dynsym, which is missing in llvm-objdump.

[LLVMdev] [lld] ARM/Thumb atom forming
Thanks, Shankar.
I needed to override all the places where st_value had been used, and it worked.
But there another problem appeared: after correcting all atoms, I cannot distinguish between ARM and Thumb symbols in the further stages when fixing up relocations.
I used to check targetVAddress (in terms of the relocation handler) since it contained 1 in the least bit when addressing Thumb

In ARM embedded applications, there are some compilers that support useful function and variable attributes that help the compiler communicate information about symbols to downstream object consumers (i.e. linkers).

I always wonder if such extension is worth the effort.
