R 3.0.0 memory use
I did some benchmarking of data frame code, and
it appears that R 3.0.0 is far worse than earlier versions of R
in terms of how many large objects it allocates space for,
for data frame operations - creation, subscripting, subscript replacement.
For a data frame with n rows, it makes either 2 or 4 extra copies of
all of:
8n bytes (e.g. double precision)
24n bytes
32n bytes

levelplot problems !!!
Dear R users,
I have changed my R version to the new 1.8.1 and some problems appears when
using the previous levelplot code.
This is a simple example:
a <-1:10
b <-11:20
j <- rnorm(100)
grid<-expand.grid(a = a, b = b)
levelplot(j~a*b, grid)
Normaly in my previous vs this was suffice to produce the levelplot.
Now, an empty R graphics device appears with the following error

Restrict who can query my DNS
Hello everyone, could you help me find a solution to restrict who can check my DNS within my domain?
I have a domain controller with SAMBA4 and as DNS backend I use BIND9.
I would like to be able to define who are the IPs that I want to allow to consult my DNS. I tried the following but I failed to get it
/etc/bind/named.conf.options
...
options {
allow-query {
localhost;
};
....
}

Restrict who can query my DNS
Thank you very much for the promptness of your response.
blocking port 53 I don't think it's a good idea, at least in my situation, since for example I would have to open it in the future to be able to add new PCs to the domain.
I don't know if the samba configuration files, overwrite within the zone configuration of my domain, who can query my DNS (I suppose it does), but I

slog/L2ARC on a hard drive and not SSD?
Hi,
Out of pure curiosity, I was wondering, what would happen if one tries to use a regular 7200RPM (or 10K) drive as slog or L2ARC (or both)?
I know these are designed with SSDs in mind, and I know it''s possible to use anything you want as cache. So would ZFS benefit from it? Would it be the same? Would it slow down?
I guess it would slow things down, because it would be trying to

Metadata & Opus Files?
Hello,
I'm using a libopus enabled ffmpeg version on Kubuntu (Not that this should matter from what I've seen), and i'm interested in adding metadata (Such as Track Title/Artist) to my videos that I convert. How can I do this? I've seen the metadata usage and read the ffmpeg documentation, but I'm still uncertain.
I'm currently using command similar to: ffmpeg -ss

You might want to compare different encoders. From what I have
read, lame and its derivatives are great for 128 and higher, and
the fraunhofer is good for sub-128, and Xing is always the worst.
YMMV of course.

Error in dispatch.fcgi...
Yesterday, our of nothing my server went down...
Rails application failed to start properly
Imediately i started checking my logs and found quickly that something
was wrong with the dispatch.fcgi or its function.
I use FCGI, and it had been working perfectly with Apache 2.0.55, MySQL
5.0, Ruby 1.8.2 and Rails 1.1.2.
What really got me wondering was that I did nothing. One day it worked
