moving from RH8 to CentOS5.1
Hi all,
Is there a way to 'automatically' recreate users/permissions when moving
from RH8 (yes, I know...way old) to CentOS5.1 or is it just simpler to
recreate the users manually?
Total users on this system is < 20.
Thanks in advance,

question about backup regimens
I need to recommend some backup options for a web server running
CentOS 4.1. The client prefers using a tape drive as their backup
device and has access to safe offsite storage. I was thinking of
system backups weekly and differential backups nightly but don't know
what software to recommend for the differential b/u's. For full
backups I can just schedule a tar and compress using

opensource backup software suggestions please
What are the users here opinions on enteriprise grade opensource software
for doing backups, as an alternative to bakbone or veritas.
We just have basic requirements, i.e backing up nfs servers.

disk space issues...any help is greatly appreciated
Hi all,
Please pardon my newbie-ness on this issue....I've a / partition which
is full (quite suddenly, actually) and I'm not sure how to fix this.
I've searched for uneeded logs, etc in /var/log and /tmp to no avail.
The system is CentOS 5.2 and is not connected to the internet, serves as
a local LAN server running stock stuff...sendmail, dovecot,
apache..nothing strange or

Tape operation
Hi all,
My only encounter with tape-backup was with Windows 2000. With it, when we
backup things using windows' backup tool, it will create a 'catalog', then
the catalog contains all the backup operations we do based on date. So, with
this we can "append" many backups into one tape. Next time we want to restore
a backup, we can choose what date available in that

Backup options.
I am a long time FreeBSD user and have been using dump/restore for many
years for disk to disk backups.
Now I am getting more and more into FC4 and CentOS, but am I stuck on only
using tar/star for backups?
Tar in its various forms are fine for some items, like home directories, but
dump and restore in FreeBSD also gave me the possibility of easily doing a
bare metal restore.

logwatch not mailing
Hi,

I noticed a few days ago that I'm not getting my logwatch emails to the

from base, no other changes have happened on this box.
I ran logwatch at the command line:

iptables question
Hi all,
With SELinux in permissive mode and iptables running, I'm unable to
retrieve directory listings with ftp.
stop iptables, and all appears again. This seems to be unrelated to
passive/port modes for ftp client.
If this is off topic, please let me know offlist and I'll take my
question elsewhere. Otherwise I'll repost with output of
# iptables status
TIA,

new CentOS5.1, samba help requested
Hi all,
I'm fighting with samba on a new CentOS 5.1 install.
The goal here is to have unix/linux usernames/passwords used for the
samba shares (which i'll setup using webmin, as I find it easy that
way). At present, the home share and one for the company's public share
are in place.
I can see the server, browsing from WinXP to \\172.16.0.106, but
permissions seem amiss. I

Backup and reinstall a CentOS server
I've got a CentOS server that crashes due to a bad hard disk. I have got a spare disk and need to format and reinstall CentOS from the SERVER CD. Backup and reinstall is a major PITA because of some of the customisations that I've done e.g. the DNS Server is set to log queries (the default does not do this). Any tips on :-
- backing up and reinstalling (is a script available)?

Ext3 filesystem access after downgrade from v4.2 to v3.6
I need to downgrade a system from Centos x4.2 to v3.6 (x86) due to
performance problems with Arkeia Network Backup and AIT-4 tape drives.
The backup database is stored on a v4.2 created ext3 partition. When
accessing this partition after the downgrade, Centos complains on boot
that
fsck.ext3: Filesystem has unsupported feature(s) (/dev/sda5)
*fsck: Get a newer version of e2fsck! [fail]

BIND issues, server not responding
Hi all,
My CentOS 5 nameserver is seemingly unable to be queried by anything but
itself (localhost, 127.0.0.1). From any other machine, including the
primary which *does* transfer zone files correctly to this machine
(which is secondary), requests time out.
I've put SELinux into permissive mode, so I don't think that's an issue.
/var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf begins thus:

rsync question
Hi folks,
I've been trying to wrap my head around this for a bit, done my googling
and archive searching but I still can't seem to 'get' it.
Here goes:
I've a spare drive in my CentOS5.1 box, which (for testing now) I mount
manually under /mnt/backup
I want to backup the /home tree to that box nightly via rsync (cronjob),
so I tried this:

enabling maildir @ cli
Hi all,
I'm following a how-to for ISPConfig using CentOS5.1 and have run into
the following instruction:
-----
Dovecot uses Maildir format (not mbox), so if you install ISPConfig on
the server, please make sure you enable Maildir under Management ->
Server -> Settings -> Email. ISPConfig will then do the necessary
configuration.

Since I'm ssh'd in to the box and X
