mongrel tuning with httperf - suspicious results
Hello all, I''m attempting to test/tune a mongrel cluster according to the tuning instructions on the mongrel site (using httperf). Anecdotally, the site itself ''feels'' snappy, but testing it with httperf reveals what appears to be terrible throughput. I''m kind of at a loss to describe the results, and was hoping someone could verify that I''m testing

httperf
Hi, has anyone run httperf in Xen.if so cna you share the peformance. Also can someone please send me the source for this. the HP site that hosts it does not respond and i do see any other sites that have the source for httperf. "connection refused", but server is listening
netstat -lptu gives me tcp6 0 0 [::]:16514 [::]:* LISTEN 1314/libvirtd so the server is correctly listening on interfaces. My /etc/libvirt/libvirtd settings are defaulted. My /etc/default/libvirt-bin has "-d -l" options so server is listening. If I do virsh -c qemu://143.225.229.190/system (that is my ip or an ip belonging to my network) I

[PIMP] Topfunky''s httperf PeepCode screencast (Zed A. Shaw)
Hi, Thanks Zed - this is very interesting. One item in particular caught my eye: Does anyone on this list have any comments or validation that Rails 1.2.1 is 2-4 times as slow as Rails 1.1.6? Topfunky provided a link that purports what looks like really horrible performance and memory characteristics for Rails 1.2.1, even v. 1.1.6:

Problem in getting memory statistics
Hello, I need to get how much memory is used by a guest system, in order to implement some monitoring function which tells me if the system is overstressed. I am currently using java apis and the binding which was suggested to me was Domain.memoryStats(); This is a binding to int virDomainMemoryStats (virDomainPtr<http://libvirt.org/html/libvirt-libvirt.html#virDomainPtr>dom,

Limit i/o capacitiy?
Hi all Is there any way to limit the network i/o capacity of virtual machine somehow? Say, I want a domU with id 1 to consume at much 0.5 MB/s of host''s bandwidth. Is it possible? 6.5 live migration speed
hello, while upgrading a kvm virtualization cluster from c6.4 to c6.5 and i am no longer able to control the migration speed. in c6.4 the default speed was the maximum bandwidth (1g in my case) and the actual migration speed was about 100MB/s. now in c6.5 the actual migration speed dropped down to about 25MB/s - 50MB/s, it varies and sometimes during migration of huge machines (36GB) i was at

Mongrel performing only half as fast as Apache?
I''m trying to do some initial benchmarking of our setup, mainly just to establish baselines. I''m essentially using the process Zed outlines in a previous message: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/mongrel-users/2006-May/000200.html What I''m running into is that Mongrel appears only half as fast as Apache when serving a small static HTML file. If I then add in Apache with

Migrate hangs at 99%
Hello guys! We have a lot of virtual machines and I recently tried out the migrate feature of libvirt. It works like a charm, even without shared storage, but when we try to migrate a VM under a little pressure (a HTTP server gets some 1-5 requests/sec) the migration process hangs at 99%. After we stop the stressing of the VM, the migration immediately finishes. I'm using the following

Re: Programmatically force shutdown a guest: possible?
Yes, you are right. Listen, as the documentation is not very exaustive, can you explain briefly to me how a guest agent works? After installing it via the apt-get on the hypervisor (I am using ubuntu as host system) how can I create a script which would do this? That is waiting for an acpi signal and actually shut down the guest. And what other operation can you actually do with a guest agent? I

Problems Windows 7 64 Bit joining a Samba + Ldap domain
Hello all, I am doing some tests with Windows 7 and a Samba Domain, but into a working SAMBA domain, where windows XP joins without problems, when i try with 7 i recieve an error like "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.". I use OpenSuSE 11.3 with samba 3.5.4-5.1.2 and openldap 2.4.21-9.1. My config of samba: [global] workgroup =

Problems with tls connection when ran with user privileges
I set up my certificates, ca client and server, as described in your documentation: http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/TLSCreateServerCerts. I followed it step by step so it must be ok. However, when I run virsh -c qemu://192.168.1.2/system and I try a command like list --all I get: error: impossible connect to the hypervisor errore: no valid connection errore: Unable to set x509 CA certificate:

how many mongrels to start
is there a way to determine how best to determine the number of mongrel processes to start? Right now i am running 2 in production but I see some people run about 8 or so. What is the cutoff and determening factor for this ? thanks adam -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

performance observation on redhat
Hi, I made an interesting observation using webservers (not just mongrel) under red hat enterprise linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 5). Maybe this is helpful or somebody with deeper networking expertise can comment on this. Once client said that 1-2% of the response of our server were unacceptably slow (really huge 3s-21s). So I did more ab and httperf tests and notice that very few

Adjust disk image migration (NBD)
Hi all, As I am doing some tests with qemu, I realized that the way it does 'migrate -i tcp:DEST:444' is not the same as 'libvirt migrate --copy-storage-inc'. Basically qemu uses the same stream as RAM migration and libvirt takes advantage of NBD transfer. With virsh migrate-setspeed I observed that one can only control the transfer throughput of RAM, but not disk

Is This a Performance Concern?
I''m running on a brand new MacBook Pro with a relatively clean working set. using Mongrel in production mode on port 3000. The home page does not hit the database and I''m getting: Processing HomeController#index (for 127.0.0.1 at 2006-06-29 14:59:02) [GET] Session ID: e11f7df52bffff304ca7c88e672ef71a Parameters: {"action"=>"index",

ruby rails performance
Hi- We just finished our app and I tested for performance with httperf. Our setup is browser -> apache2.2-> mod_poxy balancer-> mongrel cluster -> 3 mongrel servers. I have noticed that the total request per second is is about 7.5. When I increase the no of mongrel to 5, it inches up to 8 req/s. My question is how bad or good this number is? We are on a old dell 2400 machine

Mongrel using way more memory on production than staging. Any ideas why?
I''ve been trying to track down the culprit of erratic behaviour and crashes on my production server (which is split into a number of Xen instances), so set up a staging server so that I could really try to get to the bottom of it. The staging server (also split with Xen) is set up pretty much identically as far as the mongrel_cluster server is concerned (the production box has two

[PIMP] Topfunky''s httperf PeepCode screencast
Hey Everyone, Topfunky (Geoffry) has created a great PeepCode screencast on using httperf to performance measure your web applications: http://nubyonrails.topfunky.com/articles/2007/03/05/peepcode-page-caching-and-httperf http://peepcode.com/products/benchmarking-with-httperf Topfunky put a ton of work into this and really got it right. The attention to detail is very good and he researched

FCR1: Syslinux boot disk after Kernel Update
Hi, I'm running fedora core rel. 1 on a dual system, using syslinux on a floppy disk as boot manager to start fedora. However, after up2date, I can't start fedora with the new kernel, as syslinux probably points to the old one. Kernel installation was done automatically via rpm (up2date online), but it didn't change syslinux parameters. What do I need to change in syslinux config
