Complete GBDE / GELI encryption for systems without removable local boot tokens (aka USB drives)
Speaking of GELI / GBDE. I was reading Marc's excellent paper on Complete harddrive encryption for FreeBSD using GBDE/GELI and the problem I have is it all depends on a bootable removable token that can by physically secured. While an excellent solution for laptop / desktop users it just doesn't work with a remote colo users. No way you can physically remove your unsecure boot token or

Removable media security in FreeBSD
I'm working with a FreeBSD user -- a teacher -- who's running KDE on a system on which she neither has nor wants root privileges. She wants to be able to mount and unmount floppies and ZIP cartridges from within KDE, using the standard KwikDisk utility (which, by the way, generates mount and unmount command that don't conform to FreeBSD syntax; however, it appears possible to fix this

Protection for removable hard drive
My apologies if this is a bit off topic... I am going to start doing backups to removable hard drives and I will need to send these hard drives to an off-site storage facility. I am looking for some way to protect the drives after I pull them out of the system. I was hoping to find some kind of clamshell enclosure similar to what is used with external hard drives, but so far I haven't found

why does automounting removable media always have options nodev, noexec, nosuid?
i'm experimenting with some basic removable media mounting exercises for an upcoming class, and i read that, while you can use gconf-editor to change some of the mount options in cases like that, there is no way to override the mount options of nodev, noexec and nosuid. for example, that claim is made here (admittedly for fedora, but it appears to be true for centos as well):

CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?
USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev:

Resizing a fat filesystem on a USB partition
Hi All, I feel this is the most simple question but I am currently going around and round in circles and searches keep bringing me up Windows tools!! :-( I have a 512MB USB drive that has a 12MB FAT16 partition on it. How can I resize this 12MB partition to grow and fill the whole 512MB drive? Just in case I am being stupid, here is what I am doing... :-) I would like a quick USB drive that

recover data on usb drive
Hi gang I just did a really stupid thing... I did fdisk and removed the ext3 partition on my 500GB external USB drive, thinking I was working on a usb stick instead. ugh. then I did 'mkdosfs' on it. ugh ugh. Before messing with it any more at all, what good ideas can you all suggest for trying to get my data back? Please don't tell me it's all gone (though I"m afraid it

Virtio devices as removable?
Hello, Not sure if this is the correct list so apologies if this question is misplaced. I tried migrating using virt-v2v a pair of Windows 2012R2 servers to oVirt using Fedora22 as a p2v server and was happy to see that it worked perfectly. I notice however that the windows icon for "safe removal" now appears on the bottom right, and when I click it, apparently I can "safely

Removable drive configuration
I have a box running CentOS 5.3 with two Dataport removable drive bays installed on the second IDE interface (/dev/hdc and hdd). I want to configure it so I can plug in and mount various drives at different times, including different size drives. So far it will only recognize the first drive I plug in, and only if I boot the box after inserting the drive. Is there any way to set it up so I

[LLVMdev] Global variable initializer type does not match global variable type
Hello. I've managed to create a bitcode file (attached; also available at [1]) which produces a series of identical errors when verified: | Global variable initializer type does not match global variable type! | %i.NilClass* @nil When ran through llvm-dis and recompiled, through, it verifies successfully. If I disassemble it one more time, the result is identical to the first
