A few easy dpkg optimizations for supermin
I have done some printf profiling and found that supermin's calls to
dpkg for individual packages are quite expensive. Here are some
patches that gather all information on demand where possible.
On my Debian/unstable-based workstation at home, preparing a minimal
appliance using
$ ./supermin --use-installed --prepare bash -o supermin.d
now takes ~3.5s (previously ~15s).

supermin and dpkg-divert
While trying to run libguestfs tests after building with
"--enable-appliance --with-supermin-extra-options=--use-installed", I
ran into a peculiar error message in the c-api test:

[PATCH 0/2] supermin: use /etc/os-release
Hi,
let's make supermin use /etc/os-release as primary source instead of
the various release files in /etc; apparently distros (e.g. openSUSE)
are starting removing them.
Thanks,

Since you didn't answer my followup message, I take it that I failed to
convince you. I noticed that I can get away with leaving the structure
of the function as-is, just changing the type... What do you think about
this diff?

[PATCH 0/2] supermin: use librpm for rpm support
Hi,
this work makes supermin use the rpm library instead of invoking rpm
directly. This, together with a needed refactoring of the dependency
resolution, should help in make supermin faster on rpm-based systems.
Surely the patches will still need polishing, especially for behaviours
of newly added stuff, but at least it's a good starting point.
Noting that you need rpm-devel on most of rpm

[PATCH 2/2] Use os-release to detect the distro
Check the ID field in /etc/os-release on the current system, before
checking for the other old-style release-/version-like files in /etc.
Some distributions (openSUSE Thumbleweed) are starting to remove them,
breaking the supermin detection.

[supermin PATCH v2 0/4] Check for output results for --if-newer (RHBZ#1813809)
This is an attempt to make supermin check for the existing results of an
output when checking whether the appliance must be rebuilt using
--if-newer.
At the moment it is implemented only for the ext2 output format of the
build mode.
Changes from v1:
- drop empty stub for the prepare mode
- add patch to ignore --if-newer on modes different than build
- squash patch with stub for the build mode

Options for dpkg when using package type
Hi,
I''m trying to use "package" with "provider" "dpkg" to install packages in
Ubuntu that is not in a repository (or packages that I don''t want to
take from a repository). Typical examples of this are "AdobeReader"
(acroread) and "Opera". The problem with these packages is that they
don''t seem to have a 64 bit version

Bug#696810: If using apt-get and not dpkg -i, xcp-xapi/networking_type isn't respected
Package: xcp-networkd
Version: 1.3.2-13
Severity: serious
If apt-get was used to install xcp-networkd instead of dpkg -i, then
the debconf value selected for network-type wasn't respected. In other
words, the users does:
apt-get install xcp-networkd
then selects "bridge" in debconf, then it's "openvswitch" which appears
in /etc/xcp/network.conf instead of bridge.

Bug#721999: dpkg-shlibdeps: error: couldn't find library libxenstore.so.3.0 needed by debian,/libxen-4.3/usr/lib/libxenlight-4.3.so (ELF format: 'elf64-x86-64'; RPATH: '/usr,/lib')
Hi,
This is just a quick note that I receive effectively the same error when
doing an amd64 build.
A workaround is to install the binary package libxenstore3.0 but of
course the source build should not require an external install of one of
the packages that it builds.

[PATCH] configure: Look for dpkg* only in /usr/bin, /bin
dpkg used to ship with a symlink /usr/sbin/dpkg-divert ->
../bin/dpkg-divert that recently got removed nd caused
breakage (libguestfs build failures) because configure had chosen the
wrong binary.

[PATCH v3 13/22] v2v: linux: Properly ignore rpm/dpkg-move-aside kernels.
The old virt-v2v code ignored boot kernels with names like
"/boot/vmlinuz-*.rpmsave". The transscribed code did not because the
Str module requires ‘|’ to be escaped as ‘\|’.
This changes the code to use PCRE and fixes it.
