Hello All, I just discovered that the last I unfortunately I send only to Louis - not the list. So below are my answers included (and log outputs that were requested). Never the less in meantime I have investigated further into SAMBA & winbind. I was able to setup samba dc based on previous instructions and guidelines successfully. I additionally setup a debian samba member with winbind.

All file, share and user names are stored on server in UTF-8, and translated into client code page (not UCS2) on the fly. Additionally, server string conversion is added. Follow up to original post. If I created local groups and users in /etc/passwd & /etc/groups I get farther along. For instance, if I have a Samba PDC with LDAP basically like I listed in my post. If I browse from a w2k pro box to the samba server without the workstation having joined the domain, I can authenticate to the samba server with a user who is not in /etc/passwd but is in LDAP. So
