streaming to dialup users gives low quality audio
Hi,
Currently streaming ogg isn't practical in this situation. That was one
of the first things i checked into. WHen i looked i didn't see a streamer
that did both ogg and mp3.
Thanks.
Dave.

converting mp3's to aac+ or ogg
For archiving from source media (CD usually) to flac? I typically use
EAC either from Windows or Wine as it allows for the most configuration.
Off the top of my head I think Sound Juicer will do it for *nix, though
there are probably others that work just as well.

centos authentication via ldap produces no name shell prompt
Hello,
I'm trying to set up centos 5.1 to authenticate against an openldap
server. I've got the authentication working, in that i can log in as a user
contained within the ldap database but not in the system passwd/group files.
The problem is instead of a prompt that for example looks like this:
(username)@hostname:~/$
i'm getting this:
(I have no name)@hostname:~/$

Running UML on CentOS?
Hello,
I've got a CentOS 5.3 machine that i'd like to virtualize some
services on. Currently a reinstall for virtualization isn't doable so i
thought about user-mode-linux, UML. Has anyone run this on Centos5? If so,
feedback prose and cons appreciated.
Thanks.
Dave.

Taking the 128 mp3 and re-encoding to flac won't fix any quality issues
you may have as they will retain the same 'flaws'. In the end you'll end
up with the same quality as you would have seen going from 128 mp3 to q3
ogg. One nice thing about ezstream is that you can specify decoders for
multiple formats so if going and ripping all your media again is too
daunting a task you

unattended install via nfs
Hello,
Does anyone have a guide for setting up an nfs server for unattended
deployment of centos5? Basically what i want to do is boot a system from CD
media, pass a boot parameter nfs, and ks= options then walk away, the box
goes out to the nfs server, finds the kickstart file, reads, and does it.
I've got several machines and i'd rather not do manual installs.
Thanks.

samba3, nfs mounted directory, and dfs
Hello,
I hope this is the right place to ask this one.
I've got a FreeBSD 6.2 machine acting as an nfs server. It's exporting a
home directory to several machines. On the server that home directory has a
symlink in it to another directory on the filesystem. As long as users are
on the server they can view the directory symlinked to, but if viewing
through samba, they're

converting mp3's to aac+ or ogg
Hi,
I'll attach my ezstream.xml file to illustrate how ezstream can
be "programmed" to do various on-the-fly re-encodings.
The basic idea is to treat each <encdec> section as a pair of
cmd-line tools: implying a *ix pipe connects the output of the
<decode> cmd to the input of the <encode> cmd. The stdout of the
<encode> cmd is fed back to ezstream for

samba centos and cups client errors
Hello,
I have a CentOS 4.4 box acting as a print server with a cups backend and
samba 3.2.4. I recently ran yum which updated both cups and cups-libs, but i
do not think this is my problem. I've added windows drivers to the samba
sharea and have in the past printed a test page to the printer. Now when i
atempt to do this with a word document from a windows box, i am getting the

Yeah, ezstream is a source client just like ices0, but the manner in
which they go about processing files or playlists may differ. I don't
know too much about ices0 but in the configuration for ezstream you can
either specify a single file to stream or you can point it to an m3u
playlist and it will play though that, I'm not sure this is compatible
with how you currently queue media.

CentOS /boot kernel files removed after rpm upgrades
Hello,
I ran a yum update on a centos 5 machine. I then removed some old kernel
files, 2.6.x.14 and 2.6.x.10 older kernels. The issue is i got the error
"Grub can not create template". I checked /boot and it is now empty. If i
reboot this box it certainly will have an issue. I'm running the latest
kernel 2.6.x.15 i believe it is. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Thanks.

converting mp3's to aac+ or ogg
Hello,
I've got a FreeBSD 6 machine running icecast2 and ices0streaming four
different streams of mp3's. Now i have a need to stream the same content as
either aac+ or ogg vorbis whichever would be easiest to set up and give the
best quality. I want these new streams to handle both broadband and dialup
users without sacrificing quality. My problem is i really really do not want

centos5 iptables expert needed
Hello,
I'm setting up a centos5 router for a friend. It will direct traffic to
an internal webserver, already in place, as well as run squid proxy. It
should do nat and have a firewall with iptables. I've set up routers before
for this purpose but always of the bsd type and using their firewalls. I
understand the concepts, nat, packet filtering, etc. but i'm not getting

yum hangs when installing uucp
Hello,
I've got a CentOS 5 box. I want to install the uucp rpm to give access
to the cu command. I do a yum -y install uucp and yum is hanging on the
transaction test. I get the file downloaded fine, but on transaction test
yum freezes and i have to kill it's pid to stop it. Any ideas?
I'm looking for a program for serial terminals.
Thanks.

streaming to dialup users gives low quality audio
Hello,
I've got two streams, one for broadband, one for dialup. Well, having
had occation to use a dialup connection recently i checked the dialup
stream. Although it was streaming what the broadband stream was, the audio
quality was audibly worse. It didn't buffer, but it didn't sound as clear as
the broadband stream. I used lame to encode the tracks to mp3 and used it's

This doesn't specifically answer your question, but is it possible for
you to use an ogg stream?
I've been running a stream using a 48Kbps ogg (i'm sure I could push
it lower too...) and it sounds to me and other people pretty much just
as "nice" as a 128Kbps mp3. We can't notice it being audibly worse.
