Backgroundrb fixes for transfering large amounts of data
Hemant We''ve continued testing our application with backgroundrb and found a couple of other problems when transfering large amounts of data. Both of these problems are still present in the github version of code. The first problem is an exception in the Marshal.load call in the receive_data method in the Packet::MetaPimp class. The root cause is in the BinParser module, in the arm of

Upgrading from older version - how?
Hi there, We''ve been using previous version of bdrb (drb based one) for a while and it was running relatively OK. We recently attempted to upgrade to the new version to keep up / use supported version but we ended up reverting to the older version. Here are the things that moved us to revert : 1) With the workers we never manage to pass this error: '''' You have a nil

Query All Worker
What does the method query_all_workers() do? There is no documentation on what this method returns (1.0.1 version). Orion -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/backgroundrb-devel/attachments/20080118/9f9b8112/attachment.html

looking for a worker that''s gone
In my app, I store the job key when a worker is fired off and then check back in periodically to see how its doing. The workers delete themselves when they''re done. I would expect when I try to get a worker that has been deleted, I would get nil or a proper exception, but instead I get: >> MiddleMan.worker(''foobar'') NoMethodError: undefined method

How you want BackgrounDrb to behave
Hi, Ok, As i promised.. I am working on new version of BackgrounDRB, which is getting close and will be out soon. I need some feedback from you guys. So, please reply back. The code has changed significantly and its no longer using DRB. But I will keep the name BackgroundRb. Ok, in new API, a worker looks like this: require "net/smtp" require "guid" class NewsletterWorker

Updates and Fixes on Trunk
Hi, I am pushing some updates and fixes that addresses much of the issues that we talked about since last couple of days. 1. Use configuration option :debug_log: false to disable backgroundrb_debug.log. 2. As shown below, use lazy_load option to disable aggressive loading of models ( and somewhat stupid too). 3. MiddleMan.delete_worker(:worker => :foo_worker) will now ABORT the worker, it

right usage of bdrb
Hi, i''m going to implement a syndication-service, which will get lists in xml with some meta-data an enclosed video files, which will get encoded at the end. The syndication run will be startet every five minutes of a full hour. So i thought to build 4 Worker. One for checking which feeds to syndicate (syndication_worker) at a specific time, one for processing the list

Unexpected NameError when invoking task on worker
Hi, I''m brand new to BackgrounDRb and trying to figure out the setup. I cloned the git repository today as listed on the BackgrounDRb website. Starting out with a very basic worker, but BackgroundDRb is crashing on a NameError. Any help to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!! I am also attaching a text file with the output below since it might be

BDRB, new version questions
Hi, we are trying to use BDRB for background processing of long-running reports, and have two issues - one is that worker does not see our Report class from Rails, throws a: /var/apps/ror_trunk/vendor/plugins/backgroundrb/server/master_worker.rb:22:in `load'': undefined class/module Report (ArgumentError) from

magical disappearing background processes!
Hi all, I''ve been having trouble for a long time with backgroundrb processes that suddenly vanish without a trace. What happens is that at some point I discover that all the backgroundrb processes are suddenly gone. Nothing special is seen in any of the log files. This has happened intermittently for a long time, and I was hoping that upgrading to 1.0.4 would somehow help me out, but

Question on number of processes engendered by BDRb
I have two workers (ie two files in my RAILS_ROOT/lib/workers directory) on my Rails app. When I run a top on my box, I see *three* processes called packer_worker_r. Shouldn''t I just be having two? What is the third process for? Here is an extract of the output from my top command. The PIDs are 7084, 7085 and 7083. ============================================ PID USER PR NI VIRT

Stopping bdrb from another process gets the process killed
Hi, I''ve been having some issues integrating bdrb on a cruisecontrolrb server It''s related to the way we stop the bdrb server. The thing is, right now when we stop the process we are killing the parent of the group of the process. This is ok if you''re running script/backgroundrb stop directly from the console, but if I''m running this from another process,

''stack level too deep'' error
What might be causing this error? I see it once in 2-3 days and it goes away when I restart backgroundrb. Quoted below is my backgroundrb_server_11007.log file. Can I do anything to avoid this? Thanks, Raghu ================================================================================== /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/monitor.rb:224:in `mon_exit'': stack level too deep (SystemStackError) from

Upper limit to number of jobs queued by BDRb?
I use BDRb to process RSS feeds for users on my site (http://feedflix.com). I have a batch job that queries the DB for records that haven''t been updated in the last so many hours and kicks off a background job for each of them. If N records are returned by the DB, N background jobs gets queued and get done serially. As long as N is 255 or under, everything works like a charm.

Unable to load Models which reference plugins?
I''m using a plugin which adds a method to ActiveRecord::Base http://similetimelinerailshelper.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/simile_timeline/ This adds an "acts_as" type declaration to the Models, via the file in vendor/plugins/simile_timeline/lib/simile_timeline.rb Rails is working with these declarations, and they are being used successfully in ''regular

getting started
Hey all, Been reading through all the old posts (and the docs) to familiarize myself but I still feel a bit lost. I''m on trunk and am having a bit of a hard time knowing where to start with the particular I''m trying to solve. So far, I''ve downloaded backgroundrb, done the basic rails setup, created my worker and started it using `script/backgroundrb start`.

Cannot connect when spawning new workers on demand
Hi! I''m using the latest&greatest backgroundrb with rails 2.0.2 on ubuntu dapper. I''ve made an app that lets you run a query on several servers at once, which are selected at runtime. Therefore, for each server that is selected, I spawn a new worker and assign its work. After everything is completed, the workers are deleted. I often get this error:

Two Rails Apps, One Backgroundrb Server?
This might be a really simple question, with a simple solution. I have two rails apps running on the same box. Right now I am starting two Backgroundrb servers (11006 and 11007). Wondering if it might be possible to run only one and have the second app point to the first app''s server? TIA, Kit

{worker} after :end-time worker freaks out
Hi all, i was using bdrb a while ago and it wasn''t stable enough in version 0.2.1 for doing the job - it loss jobs or did execute only the first one invoked and so on. Now i gave the new version a try and i found a bug at playing around. When i start a worker_method over the normal Unix scheduler bdrb will start as much as possible the worker_method after the :end-time is reached.
