pre-release version of backgroundrb available now from svn
Hi, A pre-release version of backgroundrb is available now from svn. Download it from here: http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/branches/version099/ Since this release marks significant migration from existing practices, i intend to keep trunk untouched for a while. There are no install scripts, but you should copy "backgroundrb" file from script directory of plugin to script

backgroundrb / actionmailer / sendmail
Hello, I''m trying to send emails from a backgroundrb worker and the email doesn''t send. I get no log messages in the sendmail log or the system log, nothing in the backgroundrb logs at all, nothing in the production log. Below is my code for each component worker: class QuizReviewerWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :quiz_review_sender def create(args =

right usage of bdrb
Hi, i''m going to implement a syndication-service, which will get lists in xml with some meta-data an enclosed video files, which will get encoded at the end. The syndication run will be startet every five minutes of a full hour. So i thought to build 4 Worker. One for checking which feeds to syndicate (syndication_worker) at a specific time, one for processing the list

Query All Worker
What does the method query_all_workers() do? There is no documentation on what this method returns (1.0.1 version). Orion -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/backgroundrb-devel/attachments/20080118/9f9b8112/attachment.html

Scheduling same worker/method at different times with different args
I need to run the same worker''s method twice per day with different arguments. Unfortunately, only the second entry in the schedule is firing. I created an experimental worker to verify this: Worker: class ExperimentWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :experiment_worker def create(args = nil) # this method is called, when worker is loaded for the first time

{worker} after :end-time worker freaks out
Hi all, i was using bdrb a while ago and it wasn''t stable enough in version 0.2.1 for doing the job - it loss jobs or did execute only the first one invoked and so on. Now i gave the new version a try and i found a bug at playing around. When i start a worker_method over the normal Unix scheduler bdrb will start as much as possible the worker_method after the :end-time is reached.

getting started
Hey all, Been reading through all the old posts (and the docs) to familiarize myself but I still feel a bit lost. I''m on trunk and am having a bit of a hard time knowing where to start with the particular I''m trying to solve. So far, I''ve downloaded backgroundrb, done the basic rails setup, created my worker and started it using `script/backgroundrb start`.

Tests failing when using ''reload_on_schedule true''
Hi All, When I add the line ''reload_on_schedule true'' to my worker, my tests will no longer run with the following exception: Starting ferret DRb server.../Users/revelation/projects/revelation-project/config/../lib/workers/alert_worker.rb:3: undefined method `reload_on_schedule'' for AlertWorker:Class (NoMethodError) class AlertWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker

BackgrounDRb version 1.0RC1 available now
Hi Folks, BackgrounDRb is a Ruby job server and scheduler. Its main intent is to be used with Ruby on Rails applications for offloading long-running tasks. Since a Rails application blocks while serving a request it is best to move long-running tasks off into a background process that is divorced from http request/response cycle. This new release of BackgrounDRb is also modular and can be used

Using my models
I''m working on upgrading my app to the latest version of backgroundrb. Everything went find until I tried to execute my tasks. Here is my simple worker for testing: class MscWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :msc_worker def create(args = nil) # this method is called, when worker is loaded for the first time end # Send a message to everyone def

Handling exceptions
Is there a convention for handling exceptions within BackgrounDRb workers? For example, I have a worker which does some asynchronous data processing (*not* a scheduled worker) based on some things in the database. However, if an exception is raised within that worker, then the process for that worker is killed off. Ideally I would want that worker to just silently fail and be optimistic that it

can''t call any methods on workers
Hi, I''m a long time backgroundrb user, still stuck using the very ancient original version from Ezra (not even Ezra''s 2.0 version, I''m using the one that didn''t really have a version number). The 2.0 version did very little but crash for me. Anyway I finally got some time set aside to try out this new version you all have been developing.

problem with worker status
Hi, I have a page were users can start jobs that may take several hours to run. BackgrounDrb is perfect for me and seems to be working well most of the time but some times I have the following problem: My worker is set up like this: class UploadWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :upload_worker set_no_auto_load(true) def create(args = nil ) file = args[:file]

thread_pooling sleeping
I''m trying to run a single worker that could perform a periodic task for a given user. >From a controller, I imagine something like: def start_job MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :foo_worker, :worker_method => :perform_task, :data => { :user_id = current_user.id }) end def check_job @status = MiddleMan.ask_status(:worker => :foo_worker)[current_user.id] end

scheduling worker methods in rails
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, i''m trying desperately to schedule some worker methods within rails 2.0.2. The problem is, both methods don''t even get called by BackgrounDRb. my background.yml: > --- > :backgroundrb: > :port: 11006 > :ip: 0.0.0.0 > --- > :schedules: > :server_worker: > :update: > :trigger_args: 1 *

Feedback on RC2
I tried to upgrade my existing application to RC2 last night. Like many, I use this mostly for running scheduled tasks. For the moment, I''ve abandoned the effort, but am looking forward to being able to use this. Feedback below: First, the reason I was looking forward to this upgrade was to use the threaded scheduler. I have an application with long-running tasks. I found that

Newbie question on Scheduling
I''ve scheduled cron jobs etc before, but I''m curious as to how to layout a worker properly. Here''s a basic example of what one of my workers looks like: class FooWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :foo_worker def create(args = nil) logger.info("Starting test: #{Time.now.strftime("%T")}") run_test logger.info("Finished test:

State of backgroundrb (dupe?)
Hi, pardon if this is a duplicate mail, I forgot to click the subscription link the first time around. I''ve been using backgroundrb for a while now (older version) and I''ve had so many headaches because of it that I began looking for a replacement technology. And then I saw the new and shiny backgroundrb website, looking good! Initially I used the version maintained by

Deploying to a staging server using Capistrano: how to start up BackgrounDRb?
Hi. I am using BackgrounDRb to process thumbnails and upload to S3 - things are hunky-dory in development (thumbs are generated, these are uploaded to S3, the metadata is saved to trhe DB, and I get a nice status page updated by periodic calls via ask_status), but when I tried to deploy to our staging server and stop/start BackgrounDRb via Capistrano, things blew up - well, not exactly,
