Ebb Web Server
Hello Mongrel Users, I''m writing a web server called Ebb. It''s written in C, makes use of the Mongrel HTTP parser, and uses libev its event loop. The goal is to be small, fast, and language independent server that can host web frameworks. I have written a small Ruby binding which provides a Rack handler - this will allow Ebb to host Rails, Merb, and other Ruby frameworks. In the

Some architecture questions for my mongrelian friends
Hey, I''m working on a project, and mongrel may be part of the stack, but I''ve got some more general questions and ideas I''m hoping to run by this list. The people on this list have a broader knowledgebase and more experience than any place else I know - plus a general friendliness and willingness to help! I''m working with a company who has a really antique

Unicorn: UNIX+localhost/LAN-only Mongrel fork
Hello all, Last week, I finally decided to put into motion some ideas I''ve been kicking around for a year in my head since last year... Basically I don''t want to have to deal with threads or support platforms that rely on or encourage threads. Especially given MRI 1.9 where kernel threads are more difficult to debug than green ones. Given the limited scope of this project,

Mongrel can''t handle some URLs that IE6 sends
IE6 happily sends unsafe* characters unencoded if you''ve typed them into the URL bar of your IE6 window. This could happen if you copy & paste a URL from an email or web page. Mongrel doesn''t seem to handle these properly. In 0.3.13.3 it would print out something like: Sun Oct 15 23:05:38 CST 2006: BAD CLIENT (192.168.1.2): Invalid HTTP format, parsing fails. 0.3.13.5

The Team is In Place
Hello Everyone, I''d like to just officially announce that the new volunteers are in charge and given control of the project. I won''t be doing anything more than helping them get ramped up, but they''ll be in charge of doing all the stuff you folks want and are basically the owners from now on. Everyone in the new volunteer list will probably do a little announce, but

Is Phusion Passenger (mod_rails) good for single app servers
There is a lot of hype over mod_rails, but from my understanding it is more geared for servers with a number of apps on it. The reason it seems that way is how it frees up the memory if an app is stagnant for an extended period. The freeing up of the memory may not be an issue if the application gets a continuous traffic flow. I have a site that I will be putting up in a couple days and am

ANNC: qrp - queueing reverse proxy
Hi, I''ve started a new project that uses Mongrel. It basically lets you defer requests to it until other Mongrels in your (Rails) pool becomes free. Rubyforge project page: http://rubyforge.org/projects/qrp/ gems, tarballs and git repo in case they haven''t hit the mirrors yet: http://bogomips.org/ruby/ I should also add that nginx 0.6.7 or later is required for the

Sharing Mongrel Log Files on SAN Storage
Hi, My department has a SAN and I''m wondering if it is safe to have all of my mongrel''s share log files stored on the SAN. More specifically, we have 4 machines, each running a couple of mongrel processes. Right now each machine has its own set of log files for mongrel. However, I am thinking that it might be better to put the log files on the SAN and let all the mongrels

Expert feedback needed
Hello list, Some time ago I was looking for apache (as non balanced proxy) + mongrel configurations. Almost everybody seemed to use similar approaches (one of these could be found @ mongrel.rubygorge.org docs) with mod_rewrite. I don''t use proxy_balancer because I don''t need it at the moment (my site has pretty low traffic). This is apache configuration that I''m using

Mongrel 1.0.1 Officially Released
Alright folks, after nearly a month of pounding and beating up the Mongrel 1.0 RC1 release we''re putting out the official 1.0.1 release. Read all about it at the (much funnier) news posting: http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/news.html For those people in a hurry, the gems should hit the mirrors and you can install using your usual commands. Refer the the above page for more help.

Mongrel upload progress not showing progress on production server
Hi all, Tried out the mongrel upload progress plugin with Drb and it works great on my OSX development box, but when putting it into production (Ubuntu Dapper), uploads complete but the app isn''t returning any values for upload progress, and uploads are not showing up in the queue when running upload_client.rb. Before anyone asks, yes, I''m running both the mongrel instances and

Nginx, Mongrel, Proxy and REMOTE_ADDR
I''m using a cluster of mongrels behind an apache 1.3 proxy pass. I''ve been passing the request to pen, which in turn balances the cluster of mongrels. Now, I''d like to be able to use a different server to send the static files created by the rails application, so I tried to replace pen with nginx. Everything seems to work fine except the environment variable REMOTE_ADDR.

rails hyperthreading on Quad core
Hi, my video sharing website (politube.org) that I developed with rails, runs on lighttpd/fcgi (I know it is obsolete by now) and is severely under load and regularly blocks because the lighttpd process chews up 50% of RAM (1GB). So now I want to move the system to a new server with 8GB, 64bit , Quad core processor (intel i7 920) but I am not sure if hyperthreading will really do anything better.

Small updates and release plan
Hello Guys, I''ll like to suggest a small release fix before we start doing big changes: platform fixes. Current we''re setting MSWIN32 (mswin32) as platform for Windows gem, but we should be using Gem::Platform::CURRENT instead (i386-mswin32 as current Ruby windows implementation). Also, the jruby/java platform need to be defined. That change will ease the compatibility path

Mongrel and memory usage
Hello, I''m running a Rails application which must sort and manipulate a lot of data which are loaded in memory. The Rails app runs on 2 mongrel processes. When I first load the app, both are 32Mb in memory. After some days, both are between 200Mb and 300Mb. My question is : is there some kind of garbage collector in Mongrel? I never see the two Mongrel processes memory footprint
