Primer for working with survey data in R
Dear Kevin,
In addition to the advice you've received, take a look at the survey package. It's not quite what you're asking for, but in fact it's probably more useful, in that it provides correct statistical inference for data collected in complex surveys. The package is described in an article, T. Lumley (2004), Analysis of complex survey samples, Journal of Statistical Software

¿Existe en R alguna manera de que las tablas de estadística descriptiva como
las de codebook de epicalc, salgan en una tabla como las de SPSS ?

Simple Likert count data visualization
Hello,
Before I start to construct something inferior myself I would like to know if such a plot function is already out there.
I have count data of a small survey with a few questions which use a scale from "Strongly disagree" to "Strongly agree" and similar things. What I would like to have for a slide is a plot which shows for each question a line over this scale and the

failing to select a subset of observations based on variable values [Sec: UNCLASSIFIED]
Greetings all.
I'm starting analysis in R on a reasonably sized pre-existing dataset, of 583 variables and 1127 observations. This was an SPSS datafile, which I read in using the read.spss command using the foreign package, and the data was assigned to a data.frame when it was read in. The defaults in read.spss were used, except I set to.data.frame = TRUE.
The data is a survey dataset (each

standardized cronbach's alpha?
Hi list members
Any easy way to get standardized cronbach's alpha for a scale, as in SPSS?
Thanks

comparing attitudes of 2 groups / likert scales?
Hi,
I have just found this forum, and it looks like a great place to get some
help (I hope)
For my dissertation, which is due way too soon, I am doing a survey,
comparing attitudes of 2 independent groups, with 5 scale likert questions.
Basically I want to show if they have similar or different attitudes. I am
testing 4 hypotheses, and have in total about 20 questions.
I have to say my

Invert Likert-Scale Values
Hi!
I am using R to process some community survey data. Several item responses are recorded via a 7-point Likert-Scale. As I have coded the responses, 1 represents high agreement, and 7 high disagreement. This of course impacts the coefficients in a linear regression (of example agreement to self-perception measures on housing satisfaction). For some purposes, in order to make the coefficients

Comparing a 4-point and 5-point Likert scale
Help with survey data:
Hello R colleagues,
I hope this is an appropriate place to direct this question. It
relates specifically to the comparability of a 5-point likert to a 4-
point likert scale.
One question in my dataset asks "How much should be done to reduce the
gap between rich and poor"
Much more, somewhat more, about the same, somewhat less and much less.
The second

Cronbach's alpha
Dear Listers:
I used cronbach{psy} to evaluate the internal consistency and some set
of variables gave me alpha=-1.1003, while other, alpha=-0.2;
alpha=0.89; and so on. I am interested in knowing how to interpret
1. negative value
2. negative value less than -1.
I also want to re-mention my previous question about how to evaluate
the consistency of a set of variables and about the total

recommended package/docs for analyzing multiple choice tests
Hi,
What package would you recommend for analyzing the
validity/reliability of multiple choice tests. Doing things such as
classical test analysis, factor analysis, item response theory.
I've used psychometric (item.exam), MiscPsycho (alpha.Summary), and ltm
(rcor.test). MiscPsycho reported the numbers most similar to what I get
in SPSS: corrected point biserial correlations,

weighting (survey) data
Hi,
is there a function in R equivalent to the "weight by"-command in SPSS?
I'm working with survey datasets and the data need to be weighted by a
survey/ probability/ design weight (to compensate for different
probabilities to be included in the sample in each country). The
weight variables are included in the datasets.
I did find functions in the Hmisc and survey packages that

Relative frequencies in table
Hi,
I'm trying to create a stacked bar plot with the satisfaction scores from a
customer satisfaction survey. I have results for three stores over several
weeks and want to create a weekly graph with a stacked bar for each store.
I can flatten the dataframe into a table with absolute frequencies, but I
can't find how to get relative frequencies. My dataset looks similar to the

crosstable and regression for survey data (weighted)
I have survey data that I am working on. I need to make some multi-way tables
and regression analyses on the data. After attaching the data, this is the
code I use for tables for four variables (sweight is the weight variable):
> a <- xtabs(sweight~research.area + gender + a2n2 + age)
> tmp <- ftable(a)
Is this correct? I don't think I need to use the strata and cluster

help with manipulating data frames (survey analysis)
Dear all,
Can anyone recommend a good book or an online tutorial for using data frames
in R?
I want to do statistical analysis on some survey data and I can specify what
I would like to do very easily in algorithmic terms. However, being a n00b
to R I am struggling with getting R to execute what I want.
I think all I need is some source that directs me in the right direction by

Strange behaviour with the Homals Package
Dear R users and experts,
I am using Homals to perform categorical PCA on some survey data. The
documentation is a bit obscure, however, I followed the examples.
X is a matrix with ordinal 1-5 Likert scale entries on 24 questions from
about 2500 respondents.
So I run
X.nlpc = homals(X, rank = 1, level = "ordinal", ndim = 10)
to get the first 10 pc's (the number of dimensions is

NA's in survey analysis
Hello,
I am trying to analyze sociological survey data using R. It is often
important in survey to calculate both the actual factor sums and
percentages (easily done with describe() ), but also the numbers and
total percentage of NA's. Often it is important to present NA's in
graphs besides the factors.
Is there any easy way to make R treat NA's as if those were factors

Package to work with weight based data

I am working on a socio-economic survey (named as
National Sample Survey in India provided by National Sample Survey

used to draw samples. The data set uses 'weights' to estimate figures for

Getting information encoded in a SAS, SPSS or Stata command file into R.
Dear folks ?
I have a large (26 gig) ASCII flat file in fixed-width format with about 10
million observations of roughly 400 variables. (It is 51 years of Current
Population Survey micro data from IPUMS, roughly half the fields for each
record). The file was produced by automatic process in response to a data
request of mine.
The file is not accompanied by a human-readable file giving the

Logistic regression with multiple imputation
Hi,
I am a long time SPSS user but new to R, so please bear with me if my
questions seem to be too basic for you guys.
I am trying to figure out how to analyze survey data using logistic
regression with multiple imputation.
I have a survey data of about 200,000 cases and I am trying to predict the
odds ratio of a dependent variable using 6 categorical independent variables
(dummy-coded).
