Story testing views in isolation
Hi,
I''ve been investigating plain text stories, and I had a quick question. How
would I go about creating story tests for views in isolation, instead of the
full stack? I had hoped to be able to do a straight render ''/'', but it says
it can''t find the method.
The reason that I want to do this is that I want to give our
designer/business people a way to write

ActiveRecord, spec''ing find has right :order parameter
I''m wanting to write a spec that a model is applying an :order option
to a find call, but I don''t want to completely specify all of the find
parameters.
So I want to write something like this, say in a controller spec
User.should_receive(:find).with(:all, hash_with_at_least(:order =>
''user.name ASC''))
get ''index'', :sort =>

Specifing methods in a steps_for block
Hey list,
I''m refactoring some much-used functionality into a common_steps step
group. Methods like this are in there:
steps_for :common do
Given "a number of existing $types?" do |type|
@initial_item_count = type.singularize.classify.constantize.count
end
When "the user adds an invalid $type" do |type|

Composed Stories/Scenarios
In using stories, I find myself wanting to build scenarios on top of each other,
For example
I want something like
Scenario: The user logs on
Given a
And b
When c
And d
Then e
And f
Scenario: The user changes his password
Given the user logs on
And g
Then h
In other words, I''d like to write the second scenario starting with
the ''state'' produced by

Branching scenarios, GivenScenario and database
I''m trying to use stories to drive some high-level design.
I''ve got some branching scenarios where I want to follow a scenario,
to establish a base situation, and then have different scenarios which
''branch'' out from that state, possibly several levels deep.
I asked a bit about this a few days ago, and David pointed out the
rather undocumented GivenScenario

new home for the rspec website
Hi all,
We''ve moved the rspec website to http://rspec.info. We want
http://rspec.org, of course, but someone is squatting on and has yet
to respond to my email :(
The 1.1.0 docs are there. The 1.0.8 docs are still at
http://rspec.rubyforge.org for the time being. We''ll be archiving them
at the new site soon.
This new site is hosted on our shiny new sponsored slice at Engine

Okay, I''m finally asking for help
Hi, all!
I would love if someone could help me figure this out. I can''t seem to see
why the following fails:
Here''s the spec:
it "should redirect back to the index page" do
Coupon.should_receive
(:new).with({"name"=>@expectedName,"amount"=>@expectedAmount}).and_return(@coupon)
@coupon.should_receive(:save)
response.should

ridding away with do_request
I''m heading out of town, but had a quick thought I wanted to share.
Rather then using ambiguous named request helpers in controller specs
like "do_request", I''ve been using more readable helpers like
"post_create".
For example...
describe ProjectController do
def post_create
post :create, ...
end
before do
end
it "creates a new

RSpec-1.1.0 is released
The RSpec Development Team is pleased as glug (that''s kind of like
punch, but more festive) to announce RSpec-1.1.0.
Thanks to all who have contributed patches over the last few months.
Big thanks to Dan North and Brian Takita for their important work on
this release. Dan contributed his rbehave framework which is now the
Story Runner. Brian patiently did a TON of refactoring around

Named routes problem... more rails than rspec
Howdy,
I have emailed before about the inconsistencies I''m spotting when using
named routes/resource, but I think I''ve narrowed down the issue. It would
seem this has nothing to do with rspec per se, but more with how routing
works with rails.
If you have an object instance, that isn''t saved and you attempt to generate
a path for that item, even though the item may

Not seeing the failure
All,
I''m missing something simple, I think. I am writing a spec to say that my
CouponController should create a new coupon from the form parameters, then
set the current user. Here''s the spec:
describe CouponController, "When posting to save_coupon" do
before(:each) do
@expectedName = "pepper''s"
@expectedAmount = 5
coupon =

.html.erb files and autotest
When I work with a .html.erb file, the autotest rspec on rails stuff doesn''t
understand the file to map it to the right test. I wanted to submit a patch
for this, but I''m unsure where the specs would be to update. I found the
necessary mapping in rspec_autotest.rb, but I can''t find any specs anywhere.
Help?
I just need to have
/app/views/coupon/index.html.erb to map to

undefined method `mock_model'' for [RSpec example]:#<Class:0x25550a8>
I am getting:
undefined method `mock_model'' for [RSpec example]:#<Class:0x25550a8>
with my view specs after upgrading to 1.0.8. Is anyone else seeing this?
To isolate the message I did the following setup:
- create new rails project (with edge)
- installed rspec and rspec_on_rails
- ran rake spec
- ran script/generate rspec_scaffold products
- tried to run a builtin view

Story Runner: Readability of output with multiple params
Fistly, many, many thanks for RSpec and Story Runner.
Minor request to improve readability of output
Given a scenario item with multiple params..
Eg. And "the user belongs to", "Joe", "Acme" do |user_name, company_name|
The readability of the following output is less than ideal..
"And the user belongs to company,Joe Public, No Videos"

expect_render, why does there need to be a warning
There is a warning on the web site about expect_render and stub_render:
"WARNING: expect_render and stub_render, while very useful, act
differently from standard Message Expectations (a.k.a. mock
expectations), which would never pass calls through to the real
object. This can be very confusing when there are failures if you''re
not aware of this fact, because some calls will be
