Deploying to a staging server using Capistrano: how to start up BackgrounDRb?
Hi.
I am using BackgrounDRb to process thumbnails and upload to S3 -
things are hunky-dory in development (thumbs are generated, these are
uploaded to S3, the metadata is saved to trhe DB, and I get a nice
status page updated by periodic calls via ask_status), but when I
tried to deploy to our staging server and stop/start BackgrounDRb via
Capistrano, things blew up - well, not exactly,

Mongrel + BackgrounDRb + File Column = Upload Progress Bar?
Hi there,
I''ve been digging around trying to find some information (mostly examples)
on how one would handle a progress bar upload using BackgrounDRb and File
Column. I did read http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org/ and Ezra''s blog of
course, but I still have a few questions.
I made a simple upload form (as a test) that is submitted to the
"upload_song" action.

[Clang] memory allocation
Hi,
Could anyone please help me understand why Clang reallocates the same
memory address for different variables while their lifetime intersect?
Here is an example code:
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <memory.h>
#include <alloca.h>
/* Checking information */
static int solutions[] = {

Change positions of columns in data frame
Hi all,
Probably a simple question, but I just can't find a simple answear in the older threads or anywhere else.
I've added some new vectors as columns in a data frame using cbind(). As they're all put as the last columns inte the data frame, I would like to move them to specific positions. How do you do to change the position of a column in a data frame?
I know I can use

how to skip a numeric column for averaging other columns?
Data has the first row for variable name and the first column for sample
name. I want to take "Log" for all data, but how to compute without the
first column for sample name.
That is,
column 1: sample ID
column 2-10: data
I want to find an average on each column (2-10)

Does SQL group by have a heavy duty equivalent in R
I have hundreds of humans who have undergone SNP genotyping at hundreds of
loci. Some have even undergone the procedure twice or thrice (kind of an
internal control).
So obviously I need to find those replications, and confirm that the results
are the same. If there is discordance then I need to address it.
I tried to use the aggregate function

Newbie: using date-picker
Finally found a nice date chooser script
(http://projects.exactlyoneturtle.com/date_picker), but am a little
confused how to implement it.
So I put this where I need the date picker:
<a id="_name_link" href="#"
onclick="DatePicker.toggleDatePicker(''name'')"
class="demo_link">[ choose date ]</a>

Creating a simple sum (or: I suck at blocks!)
I''ve been hacking on this for awhile and am not even getting close.
Consider the following...
results = Sample.find(:all)
total_counter = results.each{|result| #Add together result.counter}
I just want to simply iterate through the list and sum the counter field
for each row into an aggregation. I could do it in a full for loop, but
is there a nice one liner I''m missing?

Global Data, where can it go?
I''m developing a stateful Ruby application that needs to keep data in
one location where all people accessing the site can modify its
contents. This data will be read-from/written to often, so I would
prefer for rails to keep it in memory, rather than a database.
My frist try involved global variables. After discovering that they
were being "re-initialized" with each new

BackgrounDRb New release.
Howdy Folks-
I''m happy to announce a new release of BackgrounDRb! I have added
quite a few new features and included some nice patches from folks on
the list.
$ script/plugin install svn://rubyforge.org//var/svn/backgroundrb
All of the code now stays within the plugin and the start and stop
scripts are now just stubs. This makes it easier to tweak or figure
out how it works.

periodic scheduling
I''ve been using backgroundrb since back in March 2007 or so. It''s
been working mostly OK for me, but since the old version doesn''t seem
to work out of the box with rails 2.0 for me, I decided to test out
the latest version.
So, I''m looking at the scheduling, and trying to figure out the best
option for what I want to do. What I have is a set of workers that

how about the global data when multiple backgroundrbs ?
Ezra,
Suppose a chatroom application, a RailsApp + 2 backgroundrbs: MiddleMan1&
MiddleMan2, running in 2 machines.
When Chater1 login, RailsApp call MiddleMan1 to get something about
Chater1 from db to memory, like his contacts or other personal settings.
When Chater2 login, RailsApp call MiddleMan2 do the same thing.
But who is reponsible for the Global Data? like a Online Chaters

backgroundrb scalability
i''m in a team that is currently developing a web 2.0 application that really
needs to scale in the very near future.
we are using backgroundrb for some of the server tasks.
currently, we have two servers (in RubyOnRails) that connects to a single
backgroundrb daemon.
is there a way that we can run multiple backgroundrb and have the servers do
a round robin on them to retrieve a worker

Stopping DRb after using BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init
Hi,
I''m having a problem where connections started through
BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init are not stopped, resulting in an
ever growing established connections between my Mongrels and remote
backgroundrbs
I added DRb.stop_service to my code executed after requests that init
MiddleManDRbObjects but that does not help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

supermin on arm
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi all,
I was testing oz/imagefactory on 32 bit arm, you have to have
kernel-lpae installed to run kvm. while you can have the regular
kernel installed also. You end up having the system booting the regular
kernel and you do not get kvm. Ideally supermin will work with the lpae
kernel.

Newbie - ActiveRecord relationships
So I''ve worked through Agile Web Development with Rails and I''m now
trying my first little app to get into the swing of things. Its a task
tracking app where people can create tasks and assign them to others,
and also log time against the tasks.
I''m having trouble working out the model relationships. This is what
I''ve got so far, but its not right as
