BackgrounDRb 0.2.0 Release! Complete rewrite.
Hello Folks- I am really happy to announce the release of BackgrounDRb 0.2.0 . This is a complete rewrite and re-architecture of this codebase. I want to thank skaar for all of his hard work. I put out a call for help with the new architecture and skaar stepped up bigtime. I had already written the new scheduler and cron compatible syntax and moved to multi process architecture. But he

Autostarting and job keys...
I''ve now got 5 processes auto started. But I when I query the MiddleMan for their keys (in script/console), it doesn''t find them. Looking at the start script, it looks like it might be creating a new MiddleMan object for each autostart BackgrounDRb::MiddleMan.new.new_worker(:class => entry[''class''], Even changing it to

Load balancing
Hi, Can somebody point me in the right direction about what approach would be best to load-balance between two or more physical servers running backgroundrb while using BackgrounDRb::Worker::RailsBase with mongrel? Thanks, Robert Bjarnason

Instantiating middleman and worker from inside a model?
In short: how (if possible) would i go about arranging it so that i can instantiate a middleman and set a worker going from within a method in one of my models? or is this a weird thing to be wanting to do? ( My specific situation: I have an ''Image'' model in my application. An actual image file associated with the model is being stored on amazons s3 system.

backgroundrb and autotest
Hi, First, thanks for the plugin. Sorry if this is not strictly a backgroundrb issue but I thought others on this list might have come across this problem. I''m trying to run the test that comes via the worker generator. The test works fine when running ''rake test_functional'', but when the tests are run by autotest I get "uninitialized constant BackgrounDRb"

can a worker commit suicide?
Can a worker kill themselves when they''re ''done''? Or do I have to do that either from the controller or the worker manager? Worker suicide
Hi the list people, hi Ezra, I just read from this message http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/backgroundrb-devel/2006-July/000134.html that BackgrounDRb will offer a way to kill a worker from within itself. As this message is from 7/25, I wonder if this feature has been added since. If not, is there any way to do it? I tried this: MiddleMan.delete_worker(@_job_key) But it raise: uninitialized

looking for a worker that''s gone
In my app, I store the job key when a worker is fired off and then check back in periodically to see how its doing. The workers delete themselves when they''re done. I would expect when I try to get a worker that has been deleted, I would get nil or a proper exception, but instead I get: >> MiddleMan.worker(''foobar'') NoMethodError: undefined method

querying status of worker with job_key
Hi, Is it possible to start a worker with job_key and then ask_status of that specific worker with the job_key? MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'', :worker_method => :auth) and then MiddleMan.ask_status(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'') >From my testing of the new backgroundrb, asking status using job key

What does the method query_all_workers() do? There is no documentation on what this method returns (1.0.1 version). Orion -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/backgroundrb-devel/attachments/20080118/9f9b8112/attachment.html

Delete a busy worker
I thought I could delete a busy worker by calling MiddleMan.delete_worker, but doesn''t seem to end. I believe this was possible in 0.2, is it not in 1.0? thanks, Zach -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Using BackgrounDRb to replace nested loops?
In response to my Rails Weenie post today[1], someone mentioned that I try BackgrounDRb to help take the strain off my application. 1: http://rails.techno-weenie.net/question/2006/7/13/nested-loops- best-way-to-send-messages-to-blog-subscribers I''ve just tried to install and use BackgrounDRb with my app, but I''m afraid that I''m not too versed in running processes

Trouble using backgroundrb
Hi all, I''m a newbie to backgroundrb and am having trouble integrating it into my rails-app. I''m using namespaces to differentiate between the parts of my app. When I want to create a new worker, it seems that it cannot find the worker object. Here''s my code: -------------------- controller app/passwd/index -------------------- class Passwd::IndexController <

hi, can someone explain to me backgroundrb and mongrel?
hi, i am trying to grasp some concepts about mongrel, rails, and backgroundrb on how they all work in terms of threads and such. is there a book about distributed ruby and processes? i havent seen any on amazon yet... from my blog reading, i have some questions.... rails can handle 1 request at a time and can buffer to a certain extent? when mongrel instances are created, a copy of the rails

BackgrounDRb New release.
Howdy Folks- I''m happy to announce a new release of BackgrounDRb! I have added quite a few new features and included some nice patches from folks on the list. $ script/plugin install svn://rubyforge.org//var/svn/backgroundrb All of the code now stays within the plugin and the start and stop scripts are now just stubs. This makes it easier to tweak or figure out how it works.

Mocking Workers in Backgroundrb
Hi Has anyone mocked a call like the following for backgroundrb? MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :admin_email_worker, :args => params [:email]) I cannot seem to find the correct manner to do it. Would have liked to be able to do MiddleMan.should_receive (:new_worker).with(:class => :admin_email_worker, :args => {"body" => "my message"}) Cheers Shane

Scheduled worker dies after about 30-45 runs
I have a scheduled worker that runs every minute, checking for new eBay auctions to post. If it finds an auction, then it posts it. If there are no auctions in the database that are queued up, it simply does nothing. I got the worker to finally run as a scheduled worker, every minute. However, after about 30-45 scheduled runs, it simply stops running. My backgroundrb_schedules.yml file: ------
