RPC, DCOM, 1745 and Other Errors
I am evaluating Samba 4 as a replacement for our existing Windows 2003 servers, as the cost to license 2008 and CALS is not going to be in my companies budget. Bear with me, as I have some basic experience with Linux and know a few things, I am by no means a fully trained Linux or Samba Jedi.
My test environment goal is to have two Active Directory Domain Controllers and one Member Server with

I have a problem with powering down my system under the XEN hypervisor.
System details are as follows:

XEN version 4.2.2
linux hardened kernel 3.9.5 as dom0
Xeon E3 1260L processor (vt-d capable)
32GB ECC RAM which has been thoroughly tested - so should be o.k.
when I issue "shutdown -h now" from dom0 the system usually reboots
instead of turning off

Bug#785187: xen-hypervisor-4.5-amd64: Option ucode=scan is not working
Package: xen-hypervisor-4.5-amd64
Version: 4.5.0-1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
according to the documentation the option ucode=scan should tell XEN to
look for a microcode update in an uncompressed initrd.
While I don?t use the Debian kernel the tools to generate the initrd are
part of Debian. The command ?cpio -i < /boot/initrd.img-4.0.2-Dom0?
creates the directory structure

how do I find out which nameserver returns a DNS query?
Hi all
If I do a "dig mydomain.co.za" from a Linux server, how do I know which
DNS nameserver returns the queries?
I seem to have a faulty DNS server, but can't see which one, so I want
to find out which nameserver (if there's 4 - ns1.myserver, ns2.myserver,
ns3.myserver & ns4.myserver) returns the queries?

Hi all,
I see centos 3.5Beta in the beta.centos.org.
Is this the next release of version 3 ?
Strangely, 3.4 is not the final release of version 3 ?
Thx

problem with centos.org whois
It looks like someone pooched a domain transfer, and the whois entry
for centos.org is missing its NS records. I've sent an email to the
whois tech contact @redhat, but I'm sending this to the list to hopefully
bring it to someone else's attention, as well.
Hopefully it gets gets out before my mailserver expires its DNS
cache for centos.org.
Expect centos.org to be offline for a bit

Samba unable to bind to LDAP server
I've spent the last several days trying to get Samba to bind to our
OpenDirectory server for user authentication with no success.
Whenever I try start Samba, it complains that the connection to the
LDAP server failed with invalid credentials. I am authenticating
other services against the LDAP server through NSS, so I am a bit at a
loss as to why Samba won't run. I'm also a bit at a

Response time on Tinc VPNs, Bandwith on Tinc-VPN
Hello,
response time: how is it possible to increase the response time on Tinc VPNs. When I use tinc over a fast or giga-bit network connection the ping-response time is normally about 1800 to 2000 ms. Sometimes I get ping response times at about 2.500 to 3.000 ms over a normal Ethernet Connection or a television-cable connection within the same providers-network in the same city. The ping-time

Hi everybody,
Attracted by the puppies, I'm trying to run lhype. The patch applies cleanly
to 2.6.20-rc2, my .config is in accord with lhype.txt, but when I try to
launch an instance, I get this:

Postfix smtp freezing
Hey all,
For the last 8 months I have been running a postfix / mail scanner setup
based on Johnny Hughes' excellent tutorial.
For the firs 7 months I have had no issues. This past month I have been
having instances where the user gets an smtp error while trying to send
email.
Restarting the postfix service is all it takes to resolve this issue.
The problem is that it has begun to occur

SIP Peering--call terminated prematurely
I am attempting to establish SIP peering between Asterisk and an AltiGen
soft PBX. This is my first experience with SIP peering.
I can successfully make both inbound and outbound calls to/from a softphone
on the AltiGen system (network access is provided by a PRI on the Asterisk
system), but they are disconnected unexpectedly.
The attachment is a redirect of the Asterisk CLI during a call that

/var partition overflow (due to spyware?) in FreeBSD default install
All:
I'm posting this to FreeBSD-security (rather than FreeBSD-net) because
the problems I'm seeing appear to have been caused by spyware, and
because they constitute a possible avenue for denial of service on
FreeBSD machines with default installs of the operating system.
Several of the FreeBSD machines on our network began to act strangely
during the past week. Some have started to
