Samba AD firewalld services
mDNS is not DNS mDNS (zeroconf/avahi) ( used for .local and .lan reserved tlds ) is an apple thingy.. mDNS udp 5353 DNS tcp/udp 53. Yes, dns tcp + udp. If and dns udp package is to large it switches to tcp. got that from wiets ( the postfix developer ) So i must believe him.. wiets is great.. Netbios and Zeroconf?
Hi, a totally simple, but maybe totally useless question: is there some (small) possibility to theoretically turn off the dns and service resolution provided by samba/netbios and use zeroconf/dns-sd instead? I know it won't be much help for windows users, because they won't find the shares anymore, but maybe there'll be a zeroconf implementation on windows someday? greetings fabian

Default Firewall Entries
Hello CentOS, I'm curious... there seems to be a couple of default firewall rules that I'm not familiar with in the CentOS 4.0 # Firewall configuration written by system-config-securitylevel # Manual customization of this file is not recommended. *filter :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :RH-Firewall-1-INPUT - [0:0] -A INPUT -j RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -A FORWARD

RHEL 6 and ActiveRecord issues
All, I am trying to install puppet master version 2.7.13 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, and utilize stored configs. I followed the guide here: http://projects.puppetlabs.com/projects/1/wiki/Using_Stored_Configuration When I run puppet --noop on one of the clients, I get the following error: err: Could not retrieve catalog from remote server: Error 400 on SERVER: Could not autoload

Don't use .local
I'm not sure if I would not advise to use .local, sometimes it seems to be needed to make a proper location for a running domain where even .cityname cannot accomplish what you need. To be honest I don't run Avahi and will not either. Avahi and mdns are actually only designed because of of bad DNS management by system administrators and have (Apple) users use all their features, the same

Don't use .local
Micrososft changed this statement a several of times. The only reason they did is because people using Apple are complaining some services are not working "well" on their OSX and it's a pain to change the DNS name of your Business Server on Windows Server As said before, running on .alocal for Avahi works perfectly and mDNS is only for small networks, and setting up some proper DNS

Advertising Samba shares on the local network via mDNS
Hello All, I would like to add support for advertising Samba shares (browseable ones) on the local network using Multicast DNS. Multicast DNS allows applications to query/publish network services on the local link. I would appreciate if you could all please share your thoughts on whether such support would be welcome in Samba. If you know of existing efforts in Samba to include such support

Don't use .local
I'm not missing the point, the point is that you actually cannot tell why .local should stay local always and forever. That's my point, you don't know either as you ask yourself already, "why should I config Avahi myself ?". Indeed stay in control of your network or stay out. 2015-01-05 13:02 GMT+01:00 Rowland Penny <rowlandpenny at googlemail.com>: > On 05/01/15

Don't use .local
Sending to you without the mailinglist is on the same level as proper administration of a network ? This is new to me and I'm sure to others too. What might be new to you is that Avahi runs on the domain it finds and not what it expects. That is how the protocol works, it searches, sees the domain of the protocol and goes on. So all Avahi users in a network will run on .alocal is you set the

Multicast over Tinc
Would it be extremely difficult to do multicast over tinc? How about reliable multicast over tinc? This would be more traffic than multicast dns, but not _necessarily_ a great deal more. It would be for syncing some information among freeipa domain controllers. Would the tinc nodes need to be in all in switch or maybe even hub mode? EthernetOverIP over tinc?

wbinfo -U id gives different users on same dc
Sure there is, Install debian, follow my howto and you will have success. Just, your using an .local domain, and thats a reserved name for apples mDNS (zeroconf) And should not be used. ( same for .lan ) https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/FAQ#Can_I_Use_the_.local_Top-level_Domain_for_My_AD_DNS_Zone.3F So the info is good, thats not the problem, finding it, is. Can you post your /etc/hosts
