deprecations leading up to C8
Was reading the long list of things being deprecated in the RHEL 8 release notes t'other day, and saw my old friend sendmail on the list. I've stuck by her because I've learned how she likes to be stroked to get the best out of her, and quail at the thought of taking on a new MTA and having to learn it all all over again. But I guess I'm going to have to, soon or late, probably

anyone know of a list or wiki for GWC?
Hi! totally OT... Hoping there is a mailing list or wiki (or other help forum) for GWC, but haven't found one yet. I'm working on converting a bunch of my LPs to CDs, and am using GWC (Gnome Wave Cleaner, or GTK Wave Cleaner) to clean up the noise. It works great, but I can't figure out how to deal with certain types of pressing flaws that create a thump every time around. Anyone

another bizarre thing...
Is this on both EL6 and EL7? If only EL7, it could be control groups causing the issue. The idea of cgroups is to prevent zombie processes, but if you need your program to spawn another process then restart itself while the other process continues to run, you need to launch it in a different control group, or the shutdown of the parent process will also kill the child. In my case, we have an

OT Hardware Forum
Hey Y'all, Is there a forum where I can discuss hardware and CentOS 7? I'm considering building a new desktop system specifically designed for CentOS 7 and the Folding At Home project. This mail list seams to be oriented toward CentOS software issues not hardware discussions. -- _ ?v? /(_)\ ^ ^ Mark LaPierre Registered Linux user No #267004

Google Earth on EL6.x x86_64
Has anyone gotten 64-bit google earth to run on el6 x86_64? It dies almost immediately, complaining for lack of ld-lsb.so.3. Perusing user forums at google I see a few others with the problem, but no (working) solutions. remote syslog question
Hi all! I'm still googling for this, but after quite a while I'm no closer, so I figured I'd ask you guys: I've got my router using syslog on my centos box to log the router's system events. Works fine. however, it mixes 'em into /var/log/messages along with the messages from the Centos box itself. is there a way to separate them into itsown (set of??) files? So far

Centos 5.5, not booting latest kernel but older one instead
I've been going along not noticing things happening right under my nose. so imagine my surprise when I discovered last night that my Centos 5 box has installed multiple new kernels over the last few months, as updates come out, and IT IS NOT BOOTING THE NEWST ONE. grub.conf says to boot kernel 0, and 0 is the newest one. but the one it actually boots is 6 or 8 down the list (clearly I've

hacking grub to control number of retained kernels.
I've recently had this problem on two C7 systems, wherein when doing "yum update", I get a warning about /boot being low on space. both systems were installed using the partition size recommended by Anaconda, right now "df -h" shows /boot as 494M, with 79M free. I don't store unrelated crap on /boot, I assume that yum and/or grub will manage it for me. So, why, after

Getting the return value of the last command run
All commands return a value, usually 0 if run properly. For instance, try: $ ls && echo "done" $ lsd && echo "done" The echo command is only executed if the ls command exited successfully. If one did not add the echo command with the && after a command, how can he determine if the command exited successfully? I have a particularly troubling script that

Headphones volume control not working in CentOS 7
Hi all, I hope someone could enlighten me... How could I resolve the fact that the volume controls of all the headphones I try on CentOS 7 are not working, they are OK on CentOS 6 but impossible to make them work on my Thinkpad Laptop with an iPhone headphones or a Marshal Monitor plugged with a jack connector... Those 2 headphones work correctly in CentOS 6... What could I do to get the same

Can ONLY log in as root-console perms problem
I did yum update the other day and it downloaded and installed a bunch of stuff, including a kernel. Didn't have time to reboot until today. today when I reboot, I get a message something like this during boot (from memory since it doesn't seem to be saved in dmesg anywhere): CRITICAL unknown class console at line 23 in /etc/security/console.perms and when the system finishes booting,

5.2 upgrade mostly good (so far)
Hi Guys! Thanks to the whole Centos team for all their hard work. You have no IDEA how much I appreciate it! I ran "yum upgrade" last night, rebooted this morning and encountered a couple of small problems: 1. "shutdown -h now" goes all the way down but does not power down the box like it always has before. Same when shutting down via the GUI shutdown dialog. I can offer up
